I still play baseball at the professional level myself and have for 8 seasons. I offer first hand experience and insight into what it takes to have a long, happy, and healthy playing career. This game has taken me all kinds of places, and I’ve accrued a tremendous amount of knowledge from everyone I’ve played or trained with. I firmly believe in passing that knowledge along to anyone that is eager to learn. I’ve been playing this game for 25 years and I love it more now than I ever have. Anyone with a passion for this great game is welcome to throw with Joe.

Get to know Coach Joe

About Me:

8 years of professional baseball up to the AA level with 3 organizations. I started my career playing independent baseball after graduating from Division 3 Maryville College. I worked myself through the ranks of Indy ball for 4 years before I finally was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021. After making it to AA with the DBacks, I was released and found myself back in Indy ball for the end of 2021 and all of the 2022 season. After posting a good season for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, I was signed by the Boston Red Sox for the 2023 season. I started ‘23 in High A and was soon promoted to AA where I posted good numbers. Despite the on field success, the Red Sox let me go at the end of July. However, the Toronto Blue Jays picked me up two days later and I finished the ‘23 season in AA with them. At the end of the season I became a free agent and ultimately ended up back in independent baseball with the Staten Island FerryHawks for the 2024 season.

How I can help you improve your game:

I can help players improve in a variety of ways. Anything from acquiring more general knowledge of the game to discussing the most advanced movement patterns needed to throw at the highest level. I am well versed in the training side of baseball as well as the throwing side. Being a pitcher is about so much more than just getting up there and throwing the ball. I’m confident that I can help any player that is open minded and eager to learn.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

An hour long session with me would be broken down into 3 sections.

-1: Dynamic warmup, bands, mechanical work (20 min)

-2: Catch play with focus for the day, mound work/bullpen (25 min)

-3: Post throwing mental game assessment, arm care (15 min)

Career summary and accomplishments:

I have 3 years of experience giving private pitching lessons. I was also a Performance Coach at Legacy Performance in Mesa. At Legacy, I assisted in training the Park University baseball team and also ran youth group training programs.

Best coach I ever had:

Scott “Skip” Nathanson is the best coach I’ve ever had. He was my first manager in independent baseball and he changed how I saw the game. It was a low level league and we weren’t making much money, but he still had more passion and energy than any coach I’ve ever had. He really showed me that no matter where you are, you treat it just like it’s the big leagues. If you do that, when you make it to the big leagues, you won’t feel out of place and you’ll know that you’ve earned every bit of it.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I’ve developed myself into the professional pitcher that I am today. I started at the bottom of the totem pole and have worked for every accomplishment I’ve had in my career. I’m from a small town in Tennessee and went to a Division 3 college to continue playing this game. I started at the depths of independent baseball and climbed my way out of there. I’ve made it to the AA level with three organizations and am still striving to surpass that. I have first hand knowledge of what professional pitchers do in their training to try to play at the Major League level because I am doing it myself.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you find yourself needing to cancel or adjust your booking within 24 hours of your purchase, just let us know. We'll provide a refund - no questions asked. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're here to support your learning journey.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
