I don't just teach you how to play basketball, I teach you how to win..

It is a simple game with many variables that must first be understood from a fundamental level. I teach skill, but my main focus is learning the game inside and out. Basketball intelligence - body position, angles, reads, misdirection, timing, pace, team dynamic... These are my elements of focus. When you fully understand the game, your skills become multiplied. Don't pick me if you don't plan on playing defense. There are two ends of the court. If you want to win you play both. And understanding one end increases your understanding of the other. Defense can be made simple, and I will show you how. I actually prefer to get kids early (between ages 5-10) before they form bad habits, so that is the age range of my focus. I prefer clients of any age range that are just getting started, but I of course will consider all clients. If I believe I can help you, I will. I am also open to train adults that want to learn, looking to step up their fun and fitness. I have some great basketball workouts that are much more fun that running on a treadmill. Get your skills and body tight for those rec gym battles. And lastly, all people are different and learn at different paces. I adjust to you, and individualize workouts based on need and ability.

Get to know Coach Ryan

About Me:

I played D1 basketball at Oakland University for four years. A lot of life lessons as well as basketball lessons were learned. I have also coached a few of my son and daughter's basketball teams, along with beginning individual training this past year.

How I can help you improve your game:

As mentioned in previous sections, I focus to improve a player from a fundamental level, to fully understand the game, inside and out, at both ends of the court. I do teach skill, but I wish to make, what can at times be a chaotic, sophisticated game, become much more simple and controlled. I don't just want you to be a good basketball player. I coach so you will be a winning basketball player.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Warm up - Recap previous session - Ask client's thoughts on what is understood or what is not so well understand from last session - Iron out misunderstandings if need be, otherwise... - Advance learning in that field / introduce new learning element - Tie in new element to previous training - Skills session - Play one on one, forcing for those moments where the new (and previous) lesson comes into play - What to work on until next time.

Basketball instruction is fine, but you can only truly learn by doing and playing. I have to play my clients and force situations in which they have to apply what is being taught in real life situations. Only then will they fully understand the training's purpose and usefulness. These are hard-knock times, but invaluable when it comes to a client's growth, and ultimately, their success.

Career summary and accomplishments:

Most of my coaching consists of basketball camps, coaching my children's rec teams, and individualized training for my kids and a few of their teammates. It is here that I have grasped a true understanding of how to teach, how to customize workouts, and how to strike a balance between work and fun.

Best coach I ever had:

The best coach I ever had was my high school coach Gil Guerrero. He taught us the fundamentals of how to win, how to play as a team, and how to get the most out of our abilities. But just as important, he helped shape us into men that took responsibility for our actions and failures. He treated us with respect and demanded our total effort. Hell or high water, we competed. Nothing was given, everything was earned, and he turned us into champions. Best coach I ever had.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I am a competitive person by nature, but while in the midst of raising a six year old girl and an eight year old boy, I have learned patience. And though patient, I can at times be demanding. I will push and challenge but never too far. Some kids have set up limits in their mind. It is my responsibility to expand what they believe they are capable of.

Having seen my kids get faulty instruction from other coaches they have had, I get a great sense of joy out of showing kids the correct way to play and think the game. Being able to see hard work pay off in a young person is a great feeling.

There are a lot of life lessons to be gained from sports. I want to help clients get better at basketball, yes, but I also hope in the midst of that they will become better, confident people, with an understanding of work ethic, discipline, and what it takes to be successful.

I want you or your kid to have fun. Learning can be frustrating at times, but no matter the activity, it should always come back to having fun. Enjoyment is where true learning begins. We need to laugh and not take it too seriously. If my client isn't having fun or enjoying the journey, then I feel I have failed that client.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
