Experienced Youth and High School Lacrosse Goalie coach in San Francisco

My name is Ryan Kaufman and I am a lacrosse goalie coach and player with over 10 years of playing experience, with over 5 years of coaching experience at the youth and high school levels. I have competed at both the high school and college levels and continue to play today, which allows me to bring a modern, player-first perspective to the goalie position. I am also the current goalie coach at Urban High School in San Francisco. I specialize in training youth and high school goalies, working with both boys and girls, tailoring my coaching to each athlete’s size, style, and experience level. My approach combines strong foundational fundamentals with the most current and competitive-level techniques used in today’s game, helping goalies strengthen while preventing bad habits from forming early. What sets me apart as a coach is my focus on the mental side of goaltending. I focus on confidence, composure, and a true understanding of the position, which I believe are just as important as physical skill. My goal is to help young goalies build confidence, understand their role at a deeper level, and gain the tools they need to perform at a high level, no matter their size or style.

Get to know Coach Ryan

About Me:

I am a nursing student at the University of San Francisco with a strong passion for lacrosse and over 10 years of playing experience. I currently coach at the high school level, play recreationally, and have been recruited out of high school to compete in college lacrosse at the NAIA and MCLA levels. Lacrosse has been a constant part of my life since the moment I started playing in 6th grade, and whether I am coaching, competing, or watching the game, my love for the sport has stayed constant. I truly enjoy helping young athletes develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the game, and I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the next generation of lacrosse players.

How I can help you improve your game:

Playing goalie and lacrosse in general demands a high level of athleticism as well as mental toughness. I have a strong understanding of the techniques and mechanics required to excel as a goalie, along with a deep appreciation for the mental and psychological aspects of the position. Through my coaching, I help players develop not only their technical skills, but also their ability to stay focused, composed, and confident in high-pressure situations.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

I typically begin each session with a brief dynamic warm-up and stretching, then transition into footwork and hand-eye coordination drills. From there, I lead a full goalie-specific warm-up with an emphasis on core fundamentals and proper technique. Then time permitting, I will end sessions with two to three specialized drills tailored depending on what I feel the athlete can improve on. We finish with a short cooldown while reviewing the key lessons from the session and discussing how to carry those improvements into future practices and games.

Career summary and accomplishments:

Playing-wise, I began lacrosse in 6th grade as an attack and midfield player before transitioning to defense in 7th grade. I did not begin playing goalie until my first year of high school, which is when I truly started to excel in the sport. After a COVID-shortened junior season as the varsity starter, I completed a full varsity season as a team captain and earned defensive MVP honors. I went on to play briefly at the NAIA level before shifting my focus toward academics, while also helping to create and play for the MCLA team at the community college I attended. Coaching-wise, I started with youth teams and private lessons before transitioning to the high school level last year, where I continued to expand my coaching experience. In my first season, both of my girls’ varsity goalies were named All-League, and I also served as a guest coach with Goaliesmith Lacrosse during their Northern California session in San Rafael.

Best coach I ever had:

The most impactful coach I have ever had was my first high school coach, Michael Delabar. Prior to high school, I had never truly excelled in any sport, but Coach Delabar gave me what I needed most to succeed: perseverance and opportunity. That opportunity came through my goalie position, and once I stepped into the net, I never looked back. I didn’t begin to fully thrive in lacrosse until I was given that chance, and every accomplishment I’ve achieved in the sport can be traced back to that moment and to the coach who believed in me. My goal as a coach is to provide that same perseverance and opportunity to every athlete I work with. Regardless of skill level or experience, I will do everything I can to help players discover their potential and give them their own chance to succeed.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I am an enthusiastic and passionate coach who takes lacrosse and the goalie position very seriously. While I am kind, patient, and committed to making every athlete feel comfortable, I also believe in pushing players to reach their potential and holding them to high standards. With consistent effort and commitment, I strive for progress and concrete results. With my past experience and commitment to the game, I am sure that these results can become a reality for young goalies under my coaching.
