Hello future basketball stars! My name is Maxwell Faulkner and I've been coaching basketball for the past 18 years. My biggest accomplishment from being a coach was when I was the head women's varsity basketball coach at Math and Science College Prep High School. I was able to turn a bunch of girls that didn't know how to dribble a basketball into Sectional Champions in a span of 1 year. We won the 2017-2018 Los Angeles Division 5 Sectional Championship, and I won coach of the year for that season. The next season we went 22-2, and were runner-up at the championship game! I was also lucky enough to have a couple girls on the team that ended up winning Players of the Year for their outstanding play and dedication to making not only theirselves better, but their teammates as well. Basketball has always been a priority in my life. I played on the varsity team all throughout high school and played AAU for 10 years. I first started coaching at kids basketball camps, then in college at Purdue Athletes Life Success Program at Purdue University, and National Youth Sports located in Indianapolis, to becoming a Varsity basketball coach at a high school. Now I would love to pass my knowledge on to any athlete who wants to improve their game!

About Me:

My biggest accomplishment from being a coach was when I was the head women's varsity basketball coach at Math and Science College Prep High School. I was able to turn a bunch of girls that didn't know how to dribble a basketball into Sectional Champions in a span of 1 year. We won the 2017-2018 Los Angeles Division 5 Sectional Championship, and I won coach of the year for that season. The next season we went 22-2, and were runner-up at the championship game! I was also lucky enough to coach two girls on the team that ended up winning Players of the Year for their outstanding play and dedication to making not only theirselves better, but their teammates better on the court.

How I can help you improve your game:

I always start each athlete with the fundamentals. I see how they perform and then determine which level of skill I can put them in. I have coached athletes that didn't know how to shoot, into knocking down three pointers consistently. I have coached athletes who couldn't dribble a basketball, into becoming a force to be reckon with on offense. I have coached athletes who were uncoordinated, slow, and weak (strength wise), into becoming a player that could not be pushed around, and hard to keep up with. While working with me, athletes will improve their skills each day at practice.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Each practice will consist of offense, defense, and physical fitness. For offense, we will focus on driving in the lane, passing the ball, hitting layups, knocking down jump shots, shooting free throws, and shooting 3 pointers (depending on their shooting level). For defense, we will focus on sliding their feet, keeping their hands up, jumping the passing lane, forcing players to the baseline, being on help side when teammates need it, rebounding and boxing out, and staying quick on their feet. For physical fitness, I've been a personal trainer for the past 11 years now, where I focus on muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. Each athlete will be in tip-top shape come basketball season!

Career summary and accomplishments:

I've been coaching basketball for the past 18 years now. I first started coaching while a Lake Central High School's basketball summer camp, where I coached kids from grades 4th-8th. I then continued coaching in college at Purdue Athletes Life Success Program located at Purdue University, where I was Assistant Director alongside Dr. William Harper. During those years, I also coached at National Youth Sports in Indianapolis, where I coached beginners. When moving to California, I became the head women's varsity basketball coach at Math and Science College Prep High School. In 2017-2018, we won the CIF Los Angeles Division 5 Sectional Championship, two girls on the team won Players of the Year, and I won Coach of the Year for that season. In 2018-2019, we had an outstanding 22-2 record, we won the Winter Legacy Tournament, and we were runner-up at the CIF Division 5 Sectional Championship. I then became a private basketball coach and personal trainer, which is what I am doing now!

Best coach I ever had:

I would say I had two great coaches. My Dad and Coach Robert Rigg. They were my AAU basketball coaches and they understood the game of basketball better than I have ever seen in my years of playing. They taught me the fundamentals, how to keep my composure on the court, and how to not take it so seriously so you can have fun while competing. From their teachings, I was able to be a leader on the court for my teammates, and even make friends from opposing teams to show respect from their play.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

Athletes and and parents, know this, I am a dedicated basketball coach who loves to see each athlete progress and thrive in this sport. My passion for coaching and for the game of basketball will spread like wild fire to each athlete and parent. Athlete's be excited! You will improve each practice and continue to grow as not only a basketball player but as a respected individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
