Get to know Matt

Tennis instruction for all ages and abilities.

I’ve been a Floridian my entire life until I made the move up to Virginia about 2 years ago with my wife and 3 dogs. I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s in Sports Medicine and a master’s in Sport Administration. I grew up loving and playing multiple sports and wanted to do something in the health profession so I could ensure that athletes stay healthy and perform their best. I’ve been a certified athletic trainer, high school teacher, and high school tennis coach for the past 20+ years. However, I became a USPTA teaching professional about 10 years ago and have taught kids as young as 5 to adults as old as 65. I coached the Gainesville High School Girls’ Tennis Team to the Regional Semifinals this Spring. Over the summer, I was the co-director and head tennis pro at Highlands Tennis Club where we finished 3rd place in the Tyson’s Cup. I believe tennis is truly a sport of a lifetime that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.

About me

I’ve been a Floridian my entire life until I made the move up to Virginia this past February with my wife and 3 dogs.

I can improve your game by using a player-centered communication coaching style. I will tailor my instruction based on each individual’s needs and desires.

I begin with a 10-15 minute warmup to get loose and talk with my student(s) about how their past week/weekend went and determine what my student would like to work on during the lesson. I like to start with mini tennis and then work back to the baseline. This gives me a chance to check out how my students are moving and reacting to the ball on the court. I then like to focus on a couple of shots using different drills and progressing from stationary underhand tossing to feeding with the racquet on the move so they can work on their footwork. I’ll end the lesson with playing some practice points or games to combine all of the different strokes covered during the lesson.

20 years of coaching boys and girls high school tennis in Florida with several team District/Regional Championships, and individual State qualifiers. Since I’ve moved to Virginia 2 years ago, my team has advanced to the Regional Finals and State Semifinals. I became a USPTA teaching professional about 10 years ago where I’ve taught kids as young as 5 years old to adults as old as 65.

My dad was probably the best coach that I’ve ever had. My dad coached my older brother and many sports growing up, but not tennis. However, he taught me to be coachable and how to be a coach.

I played many sports growing up as a kid but never had a private or group tennis lesson in my life. When coaching and teaching tennis I try to relate different aspects of tennis to other sports. I encourage kids to play multiple sports and believe some of my best tennis players are multi sport athletes. I also enjoy playing pickleball, golf, disc golf, kayaking, and mountain biking during my free time.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

  • Good Fit Guarantee — If your first lesson isn't the right fit, we'll move your lesson credit to a new coach. No hassle.

  • Easy rescheduling — Cancel or reschedule up to 4 hours before a lesson, no questions asked.

  • Coach no-shows — You'll be fully credited and we'll help you find a replacement.

  • Flexible credits — Unused lessons last 12 months and can be used with any coach on the platform.

AU was created by former college and pro athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process + background check, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
