I can help someone improve their game by providing constructive feedback by focusing on specific actions or situations rather than general criticism. For example, instead of saying "You need to pass better," you could say "Try to keep your passes on the ground for better accuracy." I would also emphasize the importance of mastering the fundamentals of soccer, such as ball control, first touch, and spatial awareness. These are the building blocks upon which more advanced skills are built. I would focus on building confidence as it plays a big role in performance. This can be done by encouraging the player, celebrating improvements, and helping them stay positive even when facing challenges or setbacks. Soccer is as much a mental game as it is physical. Offer advice on staying focused, handling pressure, and maintaining a positive mindset during games and practice sessions.
A typical training session would start with a warm-up technical drill. This would then progress into a passing drill. Following this I would allow time for the player to voice areas of the game they would like to focus on and incorporate a drill depending on their suggestion. I would end every training session with a fitness drill that can be used to track progress overtime. I would try to keep trainings between an hour to and hour and a half and remain efficient during this time as we should not have to go over this time to accomplish these objectives and it will promote a fast-paced strong work ethic during the session.
I have been coaching since freshmen year of college. The age has ranged from U5-U15 girls and boys.
One of the best coaches I ever had was Darren Llewellyn. He was my coach from the ages of 6-14 years old. He was one of the best because of his unwavering commitment to perfecting out technical ability. Every single day, we would do the SAME drill to start practice. Every. Single. Day. During this time, being young, I was always annoyed by this and did not see how this was beneficial to my performance at all as I felt I had already perfected these skills. It was not highlighted, until later in my collegiate career, how this put me ahead of other athletes I was competing against. This really set the tone for me that if you want to be good at something, you need to continue perfecting that skill over, and over again.
One thing I want athletes and parents to know about me is that my athletic success was not linear. I feel there is sometimes a lack of transparency in an athlete's story, where the struggles and downsides of playing a sport are not focused on. This is something I want to reinforce in individuals that I can train. I want athletes to understand that there are going to be bad days, but there are ways to control this so that it does not take a mental toll. I want to reinforce in young athletes that your confidence should not be dictated upon your performance one day versus another. I have seen and been through this first hand, and understand the mental decline this can take on someone if not given the proper mentoring and support. I want to be that person for young athletes, among being able to help them physically and technically in their sport.
