Get to know John

Helping hockey players build skills, confidence & love for the game.

I grew up loving hockey and spending countless hours at practices, clinics, and skills sessions, so I know firsthand how much the right coach can impact a young player. Now, I love being able to give that experience back by helping players improve their skating and hockey skills while building confidence on the ice. My coaching style is positive, patient, and personalized to each athlete. I want every player I work with to leave the ice feeling like they learned something, got better, and are excited for their next session.

About me

Hockey has been a major part of my life since I was a kid. I played at the elite prep level for Dexter Southfield, where I had the opportunity to play alongside athletes who went on to become NHL players and Olympians. I later continued my playing career in junior hockey in the USPHL before recurring knee injuries ultimately led me to step away from competitive hockey.

Being an athlete has always been a huge part of who I am, and competing in college was a dream of mine. After stepping away from hockey, I continued my athletic career as a Division II swimmer at Saint Michael’s College. Even though my competitive hockey career ended earlier than I had hoped, my love for the game never went away. Today, I play in three men’s hockey leagues and still enjoy being around the rink as much as ever.

That passion is also what led me to coaching. I’ve coached youth players ages 9–18 at Elev802 Hockey Development and taught skating and hockey skills at MIT’s Johnson Ice Arena. I love being able to take what I learned from years of playing, training, and working with coaches and pass it along to younger players. Few things are more rewarding to me than seeing a player gain confidence, develop a new skill, and become even more excited about the game.

My goal is to help players become more confident and dangerous with the puck. I specialize in shooting development, including quick-release snap shots, curl-and-drag releases, powerful wrist shots, shot accuracy, and learning how to get the puck off your stick quickly. We’ll use targeted drills to develop a quicker, more accurate release that can help you create more scoring opportunities and prepare for higher levels of play.

We’ll also work extensively on stickhandling, puck protection, and developing confidence with the puck. I want players to become comfortable handling the puck with their head up, seeing the ice, protecting the puck from defenders, and making plays under pressure.

My training is primarily dry-land, which allows us to get a lot of repetitions and focus closely on technique. For players who want to incorporate skating, we can also use rollerblades to work on skating, puck control, shooting in motion, and combining skills together.

Every player has different strengths and areas to improve, so I’ll tailor drills to your individual game. Whether you want to score more goals, get your shot off faster, improve your hands, or become more confident with the puck, we’ll build sessions around the skills that can help take your game to the next level.

Every session will be tailored to the player’s age, skill level, and goals, but my focus is on getting lots of quality repetitions while keeping training challenging and fun.

We’ll typically start with a short warm-up and puck-handling work to get comfortable with the puck. From there, we’ll move into targeted stickhandling drills focused on quicker hands, puck protection, keeping your head up, and becoming more confident controlling the puck in game-like situations.

A major part of my training focuses on shooting. We’ll work on proper technique, quick-release snap shots, curl-and-drag shots, powerful wrist shots, accuracy, and changing release points. I want players to learn how to get shots off quickly and accurately instead of simply shooting as hard as possible.

We’ll then combine those skills through drills that require players to stickhandle, move their feet, protect the puck, read a situation, and finish with a shot—helping translate individual skills into situations they'll actually encounter in games.

Since my sessions are primarily dry-land, we can get a high number of repetitions without needing ice time. Players who want to incorporate skating can also bring rollerblades, allowing us to work on skating, shooting in motion, puck control, and combining multiple skills.

Most importantly, I want every player to leave a session knowing what they improved, what they can continue working on, and feeling more confident with the puck than when they arrived. Having poise and confidence with the puck is essential in today's game.

I began my high school hockey career at Milton High School, making the varsity team as a freshman. I recorded 16 points that season and helped our team win our division. As a sophomore, I took another step offensively, scoring 40 points and helping Milton reach the Division I state tournament, where our season ultimately ended against Marshfield.

After my sophomore season, I transferred to Dexter Southfield and repeated my sophomore year. I played varsity forward for all three years at Dexter, competing at the elite prep-school level alongside players who would go on to become NHL players and Olympians. During my time there, our team made a run to the Elite 8 championship game.

After graduating, I continued my hockey career at the junior level with the Tri-City Thunder in the USPHL. Unfortunately, several difficult years of recurring knee injuries eventually forced me to step away from competitive hockey earlier than I had hoped.

Competing had always been a huge part of my life, though, and I wasn't ready to give that up. I went on to Saint Michael's College, where I competed in NCAA Division II swimming—a sport that allowed me to continue pursuing my goal of being a college athlete while putting less stress on my knees.

Hockey never stopped being a major part of my life. Today, I'm back on the ice regularly, playing in men's leagues and coaching the next generation of players. I love helping young athletes who are as excited about the game as I was growing up. There aren't many feelings better than scoring a great goal, making a play that helps your team win, or seeing a skill you've worked on finally translate into a game. My goal as a coach is to help young players experience more of those moments themselves.

The best coach I ever had was Paul Noonan, my former coach at Milton High School. What made him such a great coach was that he understood his players. He was extremely knowledgeable about the game and knew when to challenge us because he believed we were capable of more. At the same time, he built strong relationships with his players, had our backs, and earned our trust.

Coach Noonan taught me lessons that went far beyond hockey, especially about accountability, hard work, and having the courage to push yourself when things get difficult. He never needed to lose his cool to get his message across. He communicated clearly, held us to high standards, and made us want to work hard for him and for each other.

Those are qualities I try to carry into my own coaching today. I want young players to know that I’m in their corner, while also challenging them to improve and holding them accountable to the goals we set together.

I grew up as the oldest of four boys, so being a mentor has always come naturally to me. My three younger brothers often came to me for help and advice with school, sports, and life, and that experience taught me the importance of being patient, supportive, and someone younger athletes can trust.

I currently live in Cambridge and am pursuing my master’s degree in Sports Leadership at Northeastern University. Outside of hockey, I love fishing, reading, spending time on Cape Cod with my family, and being around dogs. I also spend a lot of my free time at the rink and still play hockey regularly myself.

As a coach, I want parents to know that I care about more than just improving a player’s shot or stickhandling. I want to be a positive mentor who players feel comfortable asking questions, learning from, and coming to for advice. I’ll encourage them, but I’ll also challenge them when I know they’re capable of more.

I can also help players develop their overall hockey IQ. Beyond shooting and offensive skills, we can work on positioning, defensive and stick play, seeing the ice, puck protection, and understanding where to be without the puck. For players reaching checking levels, I can also help teach the fundamentals of safely giving and receiving body contact so they can become more confident as the game gets faster and more physical.

Ultimately, I want parents to know that their child will be working with someone who genuinely loves hockey, enjoys helping young athletes, and wants to see them become better players, more confident athletes, and good teammates.
