Hi! My name is Jaelynn Penn. I am a professional basketball player in the guard position. I played four years of collegiate basketball at Indiana University and one year at UCLA. I also served as a graduate assistant for UCLA Women's Basketball for a year. I am a first generation college graduate, finishing with a Master's degree in Transformative Coaching & Leadership. I'm very passionate about player development and helping athletes reach their own potential through preparation and self-confidence. I’ve always wanted to simply help people since I was a young girl and I believe player development is my avenue for doing so. I have such a passion for the game of basketball and my mission is to always spread that passion and love.

High School:
2017 Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year from Butler Traditional HS where she led her team to two state championships (2014, 2016) and a 111-22 overall record during her career. Jaelynn was named the overall No. 39 recruit in the nation and Indiana University's first ever five-star signee. As a senior, averaged 14.7 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 59.6 percent, 33.33 percent from 3-point range and 82.5 percent from the free throw line.
Collegiate:
4-year starter at Indiana University (2017-2021). The first freshman to be named to Big Ten All-Freshman team since 2014. Won a WNIT Championship in 2017-18 and appeared in two NCAA tournaments in 2018-19 and 2020-21 (Elite 8). Her 24 points are the second-most by an IU player in an NCAA Tournament game. Became the 27th player in school history to record 1,000 points.
As a graduate player, Jaelynn transferred to UCLA for the 2021-22 season and for her last season as a collegiate basketball player. Played in 24 games making 23 starts averaging over 30 minutes per game. She held the highest free throw percentage on the team (.941) making 32 of her 34 attempts. Suffered a mid-season injury which sidelined Penn after the Washington State matchup (Jan. 26). At UCLA she averaged 10.5 points per game ranking third on the team and ranked fourth on the team in total season points (253).
My workouts are based on the foundation of the fundamentals. Everything is done with a high-level of detail with guard skills that will translate over to actual gameplay. There will be structure within the workout, but there will also be times where the athlete is told to make reads and decisions during live play scenarios. This will not only build IQ but will also build a fluidity to their game the helps overall performance.
A typical training session starts with a dynamic stretching and a ball handling segment to warm up the body and hands. As the athlete gets more warmed up, the movements will become quicker and more explosive. After ball handling, we will start our shooting segment. First by getting the arms loose and starting close to the basket, gradually moving further. As the workout progresses we will start honing in on important guard skills such as ball handling, footwork, shooting with and without the dribble, passing, making reads, etc. I like to ask athletes and parents on what they feel they specifically want to improve on to create a more personal training session. I believe training sessions should be collaborative and full of questions/teaching. The difficulty of the training sessions are tailored to the level of the athlete.
I became the graduate assistant for the UCLA Women's Basketball program for the 2021-22 season. As a graduate assistant, I mainly helped with recruiting and player development. In this position, I worked 1-on-1 with the women players at UCLA and helped develop each of their individual skill workouts. During this season, we went to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.
The best coach I ever had was my college coach at UCLA because she was the first person who demanded excellence out of me daily, but also taught me that my value comes from WHO I AM not from what I do.
As a young girl growing up, I actually aspired to be a doctor– more specifically, a brain surgeon. I loved learning about the complexities of the brain and I loved the idea of helping people and saving lives. In fact, my dream growing up was never to become a professional basketball player. However, with just observing my work ethic, one would think otherwise. I always attack everything I put my mind to with dedication and intensity. In the 8th grade I made a vow to myself that I was going to pursue this sport with everything I had, with the intent to just be the best version of myself in that moment. There's no doubt that my hard work opened up the many opportunities I had and took into my high school and college career. But as basketball started to become the love of my life, I started to lose the mindset and perspective that the 8th grade version of me had created. I started to struggle mentally that led to severe anxiety and depression. My relationship with basketball started to fall apart. Through all the pain, my passion for wanting to help people never went away. I believe the adversity that I endured mentally fueled this empathy and passion for wanting to help younger athletes not go through all that I went through mentally. I am a huge advocate for mental health and my vulnerability is my superpower. I believe heavily in putting the person before the athlete and being intentional about not solely placing self-confidence on sport performance. I wish to teach and live by the mindset that the 8th grade version of me had long ago; which is pursuing excellence with the intent of just being the best version of yourself everyday.
