Get to know Coach Tony

About Me:

My athletic background, after graduating from James A Shanks in Quincy, Florida, I didn't play basketball for a team until I joined the US Navy. Participated in US Navy Representative Games and my passion grew from there. At the end of my enlistment I migrated to Australia and played in their version of the ABA (one level below the NBL) for the Central District Lions for 5 years.

During this time my coach program, HOOPS 4 Life took over my life and time. In six months the success of the players I was coaching from juniors to professional athletes, quadrupled my client listing.

How I can help you improve your game:

My undeniable passion for the game and forever being the student. seeing where the game is evolving to and the requirements needed by athletes to be successful now and in the future. Collating experiences and expertise from around the globe has given me the experience and knowledge to develop their skills to be an impactful player no matter what part of the world they end up playing in. My ability to assess players' weaknesses and strengths, but more importantly the ability to create an individual program that enhances their strengths while improving their weaknesses. This is all anchored by the knowledge on how to develop certain muscles, increase flexibility, explosiveness, leaping ability and more from the core of the athlete physical development.

There's no doubt, I guarantee positive results, on and off the court.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Our typical sessions are as follow:

Check in: Where is the athlete at physically, mentally and emotionally. This time is also used to assess where the athlete is in their game, season, etc.

High level stretch & warmup based on age, physical capability, etc.

Fundamental skills development.

Offensive and defensive fundamentals work out.

For small groups we have a competitive game utilising what has been taugnt.

Cool down & stretch

Takeaway talks.

Career summary and accomplishments:

Resulting in winning 1 silver and 3 gold medals (back-to-back) in 4 consecutive years. • Worked with Joseph Campbell and Basketball SA to develop the 3x3 Basketball Training Camp nationally. • Assisted Head Coach of South Adelaide Men’s Premier League Team in preseason training and development. • Assisted Head Coach Kristian for Woodville Basketball Club in the preseason development and training of players. • Recruiting the most successful Women’s CABL Team for Central District (in the past 15 years) taking the team to an impressive season. • I am experienced in the managing and building of an athletic program that inspires, prepares, and develops players for current and future growth and success. • I am exceptional in budgeting and recruiting, with resources to acquire exceptional players returning from the NCAA (who are Australian Citizens) as well accessing import players of exceptionally high calibre looking to expand their skills and opportunities in Australia. • I am currently the founder and coordinator the Hoops 4 Life Program (I have inserted a page for your viewing outlining the program) as well as delivering one on one skills development programs for senior players aiming to play at the SEBAL, CABL and NCAA level. I believe what has brought me this success as a coach is my skills as a professional trainer and mentor/coach. This has enabled me to assess, support and identify different tools to bring out the best in individuals for the betterment and success of the team, while obtaining personal growth for that individual.

Best coach I ever had:

The coaches who have influenced me the most are Doc Rivers (NBA Legendary Coach & Player), Sandy Bordello (Head Coach of Australia'a Women Olympic Team and WNBA Head Coach), and Phil Smyth (Australian NBL Head Coach & Player). These coaches all demonstrate a holistic coaching style as well as developing players on and off the court. This is a strong part of my philosophy in coaching and developing our future basketball stars.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I have a strong background in personal development, coaching, and holistic wellbeing. I have been working in this space since 1988 in Australia, specialising in working with young people from low socio-economic regions to professional players in Australia’s National Basketball League.

I have developed, delivered and grown HOOPS 4 Life Basketball to be one of the most successful personal, social and athletic development programs in Australia, being acknowledged by Prime Ministers and the Royal Family over the years.

I am confident in ability to support individuals in their journey towards personal and professional growth on and off the court. Throughout my career I have worked with a diverse range of clients from elementary, high school, state representative players (National U14, U16, U18, U22 and professional players), youth detention centres, women and men prisons, helping them to identify and achieve their goals through a holistic approach that encompasses mental, emotional, physical, and wellbeing.

The program developed has assisted thousands of players improve their lives, using the basketball court as the classroom and safe place, to learn, adapt and apply techniques, tools and methodology to grow on and off the court.

The program I have developed is the only program in Australia that advocate at youth court for young people to be obligated to our program instead of being incarcerated. We have assisted over 4,500 young people to attend Prep Schools/Academies, Junior College, International Professional teams throughout Asia and Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.
