Certified Mental Performance Consultant

I'm Ethan, a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. I work with athletes who have the physical ability and work ethic but struggle to consistently perform when the pressure is on. I teach them practical mental skills—including my 5-Second Reset—to recover quickly from mistakes, control frustration, refocus, and compete with greater confidence and freedom. The goal isn't just to help athletes think better; it's to give them a repeatable system they can actually use in games, tournaments, and high-pressure moments.

About me

I'm Ethan Tabakelis, M.S., CMPC®, a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. I work with athletes to develop the mental skills that allow them to perform more consistently when pressure, adversity, and competition enter the picture.

I've worked with athletes across multiple sports and levels of competition, including collegiate athletes, high school athletes, and developing youth athletes. My approach is practical and performance-focused. Rather than simply talking about confidence or "mental toughness," I help athletes develop specific tools they can practice and use in real competition.

I created the TAB Framework—Tactics, Action, Behavior—and the 5-Second Reset, a simple system athletes can use to respond to mistakes, regain focus, and move forward instead of letting one moment affect the next.

I believe the goal of mental performance training isn't to make athletes emotionless. It's to help them become more capable of handling whatever the game gives them while continuing to compete freely and confidently.

You already spend hours developing the physical side of your game. Mental performance training helps make sure your mind doesn't get in the way of everything you've worked to build.

I help athletes:

Recover quickly after mistakes, bad plays, or bad shots

Control frustration and negative self-talk

Stay focused instead of thinking about the past or worrying about the future

Build confidence that doesn't disappear after one mistake

Perform more consistently when the pressure increases

Develop pre-game and competition routines

Handle adversity without allowing it to snowball

Stay aggressive and committed instead of playing scared

Prepare mentally for important games, tournaments, tryouts, and higher levels of competition

Develop leadership, composure, and confidence on and off the field

One of the biggest things I teach is the 5-Second Reset: a repeatable process for responding to adversity instead of allowing one moment to become the next five minutes—or the rest of the game.

The goal is simple: help you spend less time fighting what just happened and more time competing in the moment you're actually in.

Every athlete is different, so sessions are built around what you're actually experiencing in your sport and competition.

A typical session may include:

1. CHECK IN

We start by identifying what's happening right now. What has been going well? Where are you struggling? What situations tend to cause you to lose focus or confidence?

2. BREAK IT DOWN

We look at specific moments from practices, games, tournaments, or competitions. Instead of simply saying "I got nervous," we figure out exactly what happened before, during, and after the moment.

3. TRAIN THE SKILL

We work on a specific mental-performance skill such as resetting after mistakes, controlling attention, managing pressure, building confidence, visualization, routines, self-talk, or emotional control.

4. APPLY IT

You don't just learn the concept—we practice how you will actually use it in your sport.

5. LEAVE WITH A PLAN

Every session should give you something concrete to take into your next practice or competition.

Depending on the athlete, we may also review competition experiences, create performance routines, work through pressure scenarios, or use the 5-Second Reset to build a personalized response to adversity.

My goal is for you to leave each session knowing what you're working on, why it matters, and how you're going to use it.

I hold a Master's degree in Sport and Performance Psychology and am a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

I am the founder of a mental performance consulting practice focused on helping athletes develop the psychological skills necessary to perform under pressure.

Throughout my career, I have worked with athletes across multiple sports and competitive levels, including hundreds of collegiate athletes. My experience includes individual mental performance coaching, team and group workshops, athlete development, and performance training.

I created the TAB Framework (Tactics, Action, Behavior) and the 5-Second Reset, a practical mental-performance system designed to help athletes respond to mistakes and adversity quickly and return their attention to the present moment.

I've also authored UNSHAKEABLE UNDER PRESSURE: Mastering the 5-Second Reset Through The TAB Framework, and have developed educational programming around mental performance and resilience for athletes, coaches, and parents.

My work is centered on one principle:

Mental performance is a skill—not a personality trait. And skills can be trained.

The most influential figure in my career was Coach Benedict. He was the embodiment of Resilience. He didn't just teach the game; he taught us how to stand firm when the environment was collapsing. He showed me that a great coach isn't just a strategist—they are a shepherd who never gives up on the person behind the jersey.

For athletes:

I'm not here to tell you to "just be confident" or "stop thinking about it." If it were that easy, you would already be doing it.

I'm here to help you understand what happens to you under pressure and develop tools that actually work when you're competing.

You don't have to be struggling to benefit from mental performance training. Some of the athletes I work with come to me because something is going wrong. Others come because they're already performing at a high level and want to see how much further they can go.

My job is to help you become more consistent, more composed, and more confident in the moments that matter.

For parents:

Your role is incredibly important in your athlete's development. My goal isn't to replace the support you provide—it's to give your athlete another professional resource and a space where they can develop independently.

I believe young athletes should learn that mistakes aren't failures and that confidence shouldn't depend entirely on a score, stat, roster spot, or result.

Mental performance training should ultimately help athletes become better competitors and healthier, more resilient people.

I take that responsibility seriously. I want every athlete I work with to leave with skills they can continue using long after our sessions are over.

The ultimate goal isn't simply better performance. It's helping athletes compete with greater freedom, confidence, and enjoyment of the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.
