Get to know Coach Colin

About Me:

Hello! My name is Colin McClowry, I'm a Graduate Assistant Track and Field Coach at North Central College. I have experience coaching football, track and field, tennis, and many others. I grew up playing and loving all sports, and there's not many sports that I would find boring to watch. I come from a family of coaches, my father was a College Football Coach for 10+ years, my sister is a full-time College T&F Coach, and my twin brother is a Graduate Assistant Baseball Coach. What we share is a drive to see athletes develop and play sports the right way. My current mission is to help as many athletes as possible find a passion for sports.

How I can help you improve your game:

My main area of expertise is developing SPEED and EXPLOSIVENESS. Speed is what made me a high level athlete, and I believe it's a necessary trait for all athletes regardless of sport. Whether you're stealing a base in baseball, dribbling a soccer ball down the field to score a goal, or diving to dig a volleyball, speed and explosiveness will set you apart.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

We'll spend a proper chunk of time warming up and preparing our muscles to sprint (especially if its cold). From there, we'll go straight into sport-specific work. If there are running mechanic deficiencies, we'll start with drills to address those. Form is incredibly important to being able to hit and maintain top speed, so form drills are always necessary. The main block of training will include maximum speed work and jumping (jumping is one of the top indicators of an explosive athlete). Again, what we do will be dependent on the athlete's specific needs. Depending on how long of a session is chosen, the training session can finish in the weight room. I'll write a program, and teach lifts to the athlete. Weight training is one of the most important pieces to becoming a well-rounded athlete, and it can produce raw power output.

Career summary and accomplishments:

In high school, I was a skinny kid who loved football. I rode the bench until I took the weight room and my speed development seriously. My senior year of high school, I ended up earning All-Conference honors as both a Wide Receiver and Running back, a feat no one else at my school had ever accomplished. A broken bone in my back pushed me into collegiate track and field where I ended up earning NCAA All-American honors 6 times. I was a part of two National Championship winning teams as well. I've seen both failure and success at their peaks, and I believe you have the power to make yourself successful.

Best coach I ever had:

My high school track coach was named Kurt Krueger. He was a very old fashioned coach and he made us RUN. Cross country runs, 400m repeats, wind sprints, etc. Modern sprint coaches would have a heart attack at the workouts we would do, but those workouts taught me how to work hard and be disciplined. Above all else, Krueger invested in me as an athlete and taught me to love the sport of track and field. My coaching philosophy is different than his, but I wouldn't be doing what I do now without his leadership.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I've been working with youth athletes for 5+ years. I was summer camp counselor for 3 years, leading the sports and games program for hundreds of youth campers. Then, I spent one summer teaching tennis lessons for kids as young as 5, and as old as 17. Now as a college track coach, I've gotten to experience and teach all different levels of age and skill. I can tailor training plans to each athlete and can do so in a FUN way! Too many "elite" youth leagues and coaches leave young athletes hating their sport. Don't get me wrong, I like to win and help my athletes be winners, but this can be accomplished alongside finding joy in what you do. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't be coaching.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.
