Get to know Coach Sam

About Me:

I started playing hockey at the age of 8 in Columbus Indiana with the Columbus Flames. By the time I got to High school, I knew I wanted to move to the highest level I possibly could in the game of hockey. I was able to attend the TPH Center Of Excellence hockey school and I played for The Indy Jr. Fuel AA team from 2017-2018. I then advanced to the Indy Jr. Fuel AAA team from 2018-2019. For my senior year of high school, I played for the Tri-State Spartans AAA program. After I graduated, I then signed a contract for one year in the USPHL and got to play for the Provo Riverblades. Now, I am a career firefighter in Whitestown, Indiana. I participate and play in the Battle of the Badges hockey league representing my fire department.

How I can help you improve your game:

I can help players improve their game regardless of where they are in their hockey game. Whether you are looking to learn how to skate or you’ve been playing for years and just want to gain an edge over your opponent and sharpen your skills, I can tailor your personalized training plan both on and off the ice to make you a better all-around player. I am a believer that there is always an aspect of your game that you can improve on!

What a typical training session looks like with me:

For my new hockey players, a typical session will typically be one hour of being on the ice and learning basic skills (skating forward and backward, stick-handling, shooting, etc.) For my intermediate to advanced players, we will work on a wide variety of skills tailored towards the individual player and position. From improving your stride as a skater to learning how to move and handle the puck confidently, I can help players hone their skills to be the best player they can be.

Career summary and accomplishments:

During my hockey career, I have been able to coach and teach multiple age groups from Mini-Mites and Learn to Skates all the way to helping high-level skills coaches run practices with the TPH Center Of Excellence. The 2024-2025 hockey season will be my first year as an assistant coach with the Central Indiana Knights high school program. Being an on-ice skills coach and off-ice strength and conditioning coach is a new chapter in my life, and I plan to continue learning and growing just as my athletes are.

Best coach I ever had:

The best coach that I ever had was coach Greg Austin. Coach Austin not only helped me learn and master on-ice skills to make me a better hockey player, he also helped me off the ice with training routines. Coach Austin always had my best interest in mind and he would always do anything he could to move his players to the next level.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

Something that athletes and parents should know about me is that I won’t solely teach the skills necessary to play today’s game of hockey, but my goal is to help develop young athletes who are strong-minded, resilient, and hard-working. Through my hockey career, I have learned that working hard, being coachable, and having a good attitude is more valuable than having talent alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
