Experienced multi-sport coach (soccer, tennis, and basketball).

My name is Ryan and I’m a multi-sport former college athlete who still plays regularly and has more than 15 years of coaching experience. I’ve worked with youth (of all levels) and adults and my philosophy centers around positivity, fun, and hard work. We are going to work hard at practice, but will will have fun doing it and will work to see improvement in some way every single practice. For more info on my coaching style, you can check out Positive Coaching Alliance (https://positivecoach.org/) and that will give you a good idea of how I coach! I coach soccer, tennis (which I played in college), and basketball. Professionally, I work at the intersection of International Development/Relations and sport and have done so for more than 20 years. I believe strongly in the power of sports to bring people together and teach us valuable life lessons and that is part of my coaching philosophy regardless of sport. My goal is to always create a welcoming, positive, safe environment so that we can spend time truly enjoying the process of getting better at our sport and having fun playing. Look forward to working together! Also- while I’ve listed a local location for training- I’m also able to travel to other locations in the area.

Get to know Coach Ryan

About Me:

Hello! My name is Ryan and I’m an International Development/Relations and Sport professional with more than 20 years of experience working with coaches and youth athletes from around the world. I coach multiple sports- soccer, tennis (which I played in college), and basketball.

I’ve been trained by some of the leading youth-focused training organizations in the world and bring that training with me to my coaching. I believe very strongly in creating a fun, positive, and welcoming environment where youth (and adults) feel comfortable to focus on simply playing and learning the sport they love. Our goal will certainly be to improve our skills on the field/court, but we also are going to have fun and enjoy our time will doing it.

Note: I’m a youth safeguarding specialist, so I won’t use any pictures in my profile of me coaching that have youth in them (which is why you don’t see many photos in my profile).

How I can help you improve your game:

In order for a player to improve, they need to train and they need to play. In order for them to get the most of training, they need to enjoy training. So, my focus is always on ensuring that anyone who comes out to training enjoys themselves and wants to keep coming to training. If you come out and work hard, then you will improve.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Each training session will be different, based on the individual (or group), but in general- there will be some element of free play (it’s very important athletes have an opportunity to simply play), skill development/focus, game/activity to practice that skill, and then structured play. We will also always warm-up and cool down and also do some sport-specific fitness (usually in a fun way that won’t make it seem like fitness!).

Career summary and accomplishments:

I think one of my greatest accomplishments is that I’m still able to play sports at a high level and play regularly. I have such a love for playing and continuing to improve my game (regardless of sport) that was developed over many years of high level competition. I’m a lifeline athlete and long-time coach who has been lucky enough to play multiple sports at an high level and over a long period of time. My hope is that training with me will help you become the same, someone who develops a love for sports and can play for as long as you possibly can.

Best coach I ever had:

I’ve had a lot of great coaches. The best ones are ones that cared about my athletic AND personal development.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I believe very strongly in the power of positivity as a coach. A significant number are f kids stop playing sports at the age of 13 (on average). This is due to a number of factors, including; they aren’t having fun, they don’t feel like they are improving, they have a negative experience with a coach, and/or their friends stop playing. My goal is always to create an environment where those things are not of concern. Sports are fun! Training and practice should be the same. We will absolutely work hard and we will be working on improving our skills and abilities 100%- but, I will always do everything I can to make sure everyone who comes to training is excited to be there and enjoys themselves each and every time.

For adults, while the reasons to stop playing might be different- the same concept applies. If you are having fun and feel like you are improving, you will want to keep playing.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you find yourself needing to cancel or adjust your booking within 24 hours of your purchase, just let us know. We'll provide a refund - no questions asked. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're here to support your learning journey.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
