I have been playing basketball since 11 years old. I started out playing for my local travel team in Warrington, PA. At around 13 I began playing AAU for the Comets. Once I started high school at Germantown Academy I switch to the Philadelphia Belles AAU program where I played for the EYBL team. At Germantown Academy I was a 4-year varsity player and was a captain my senior year. After high school I continued playing collegiate basketball at the Division 1 level for Colgate University. At Colgate I have played the Forward position. This last year as a senior I was granted the role of captain. I have played professionally overseas in England while simultaneously receiving my master’s in biotechnology. I have also played professionally in Ireland. After several years of experience with the sport I have gained a significant amount of knowledge on the sport and am highly capable of training. I have been put in leadership roles that have had me lead workouts and practices for teams. I have run several camps for children of all ages (youth-elite camps). As a current player myself I will be very involved in most of my workouts, and we will be putting in the work. My personal skill set lies as a forward but I have the coaching knowledge to train a player who wants to play the inside game or extend to beyond the arc. Whether it’s just learning form shooting for a younger player or preparing someone for the collegiate level, I am highly capable of training whoever wants to come put in the work.

A training session is going to vary from player to player. If it’s a post, we are working on finishing first. Finishing through contact, learning new post moves, but also extending our range doing some drills to attack from different spots on the court and getting comfortable in our handle. A guard workout would be more focused on shooting and attacking from outside, utilizing moves to beat someone off the dribble. Every session ends with some shooting drills whether you’re a guard or a post. I think it’s important for every player to have that versatility.
I started working summer camps at my high school, Germantown Academy, in 2014. Working at GA was always on a volunteer basis but in order to gain some basic coaching experience I worked every week of basketball camp they offered. Occasionally I would do some one on one training with some of the younger students at my school or the underclassmen on my team/JV team. I also worked all of the youth water polo camps at GA. The first thing I did when I came to Colgate in summer 2018 was work the youth camp. It was an amazing experience because it gave me the opportunity to connect with many of the children and families in town early on. Going to a school in a small town, these camps every summer were so helpful in building relationships with people in town beyond a simple hello. It's great to be able to build bonds with the people who support my team and I so much just through these camps. At Colgate, we also provided camps for high school recruits which was more of a serious coaching experience for me because unlike the youth camps, it was more than just fun and games for these girls. At these camps I worked more on skill development with these girls and coaching in 5v5. Unfortunately with COVID we haven't been able to host many camps these past few years and I have missed making those connections and being able to provide guidance to young basketball players.
Jim Fenerty is the biggest inspiration to me as a coach. He actually coached the men’s team at my high school but I admired him and still do to this day. He inspired me as a player and a leader. Coach Fenerty was never my coach but I've known him a long time. He inspired me to stick with basketball at a young age. We were from the same town and he lead small camps at our local park. The first camp of his that I went to at 11 he rewarded me with a Germantown Academy jersey that was 10x too big for me at the time but receiving that jersey from him at 11 meant the world to me. Fenerty was an incredible mentor to me as a kid and continued to impact my life throughout high school when I attended the same school he coached the boys team. He led all of the basketball camps at GA and taught me so much about coaching. Something that always stuck with me that he taught me was the importance of creating relationships with players and teammates far beyond player-coach or teammate-teammate. He stressed the importance of really getting to know the kids you are coaching. Personal relationships not only help you when trying to coach but it allows the players and teammates to trust you so much more. Coach Fenerty passed away just last year and it had a large impact on me. He had sent me a Facebook message just 2 weeks before saying hello and wishing me the best. Once I heard the news I was devastated. What brought me out of my own grief and sadness was seeing how the entire community reacted. Everyone at GA had some sort of connection with Fenerty, and there were even more people in the basketball community. Fenerty impacted the lives of so many players, some that were his, and many that were not. He helped their game so much. Fenerty is the type of leader, coach, and mentor, that I aspire to be. He always helped people find the best in themselves on and off the court and cared about so many people. Fenerty had the greatest heart and he's always one of the first people I think of when I'm asked why do I play basketball.
I know what it’s like to put in the work and do what is necessary to get to a high level of basketball. I also know what the pressure feels like at a young age to be make it big. As a personal trainer, for me it is really important to find the balance for a player at such a young age to push them, making it worth it but still enjoyable. There’s no reason for a young player to be burnt out at 17. In order to get to the highest level of basketball you need to LOVE the sport. As a coach my main goal is for my players to find the love in the grind. Find the love in getting better because the best players put in the most work and have a whole lot of fun doing it.
