Get to know Coach Joseph

About Me:

I began my football career in August of 2002, shortly after I lost my mom to alcoholism. I had a decision to make, break and never reach my potential or put myself in position to make my mom proud of who I would become. Ten years later I was a college graduate.

I play football at El Camino High School n South San Francisco. I went into football at 340lbs as an offensive lineman who specifically played left tackle. I couldn't even get into a 3-point stance my freshman year so my coaches had me play in a 2-point stance the entire year. Fast forward one year later, after falling love with the weight room, I was a sophomore on varsity as the starting left tackle. I was down 20lbs and put on muscle, increased my strength, and lost body fat percentage. I was honorable mention my sophomore year and each year after that my work ethic improved. My junior and senior year continued to play left tackle and was an all-league player and voted most inspirational player both years.

Post senior year, I decided to continue my schooling and football career at College of San Mateo (Junior College). I embarked on my new journey where I was not the biggest guy in the room anymore. I knew I had to prove myself to the coaches and my teammates. I went into college at 360lbs and over the course of the summer got down to 340lbs but just could not keep up with the speed of the next level of college football. I was given an option to grayshirt, meaning take 11.5 units (part-time student) and doing everything regarding football except play on gameday. I took this as an opportunity to learn and get in shape. At the end of the year, I was voted grayshirt of the year because of my hard work and accountability to the program.

After enduring the off-season of my grayshirt to freshman year I became a rotation player primarily play offensive guard. I was down to 315lbs and in the best shape of my life. I learned a lot about myself and my capabilities. We become Bulldog Bowl champions. After the season was done, my goal was to become a starter my sophomore year.

My sophomore year I was the starting center of the offensive line. I was able to maintain my weight over the course of the off-season and increase my athleticism and strength. When the year was done we ended up 5-5. This is where I realized the importance of leadership because there was none on this team. I did know I wanted to continue my football career at the 4 year level.

After taking a gap year and not receiving a scholarship anywhere, I decided to play at Menlo College. I faced adversity my junior year because the coaches believed I was overweight at 330lbs but I felt I was better than the players that were ahead of me. So for the first time I sat the bench all year. I played very few reps and told myself this will never happen again.

My senior year my offensive line coach gave me an ultimatum lost 40lbs over the course of 13 weeks or I he wouldn't play me. The unfortunate part he didn't give me any game plan and basically told me to figure it out. After that conversation with coach, I connected with my best friend who was a personal trainer and whipped my into shape. From the 2 a day workouts, sand dune sprites, athletic work, and weight training, I lost 40lbs and got down to 300.5lbs I was an accomplishment I was very proud of and was able to be the starting center my senior year. At the end of the year, I received another most inspirational player award.

Following my senior year of college, I pursed pro football for 2.5 years never getting any legitimate shot at making any team. At 27 years old I had given 13 years of my life to the game of football and that concluded my football career and started my coaching career.

How I can help you improve your game:

Coach Joe takes the approach of we must learn mentally while doing it physically. Meaning was must be okay with doing things incorrectly along the way while having the guidance to have them corrected by a coach.

For example, we all think we know ourselves but when adversity strikes our behavior changes we adapt negatively to the circumstance. It is my job as a coach to recognize when that situation happens and acknowledge it so an individual becomes proactive instead of reactive.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

A typical training session involves a brief check-in, the lesson taught for the day, conclusion, take aways, and what Is next.

Best coach I ever had:

I believe this is tough question for anyone who was ever been coached because every coach a player has had contact with has created some sort of impact on that person. So for me it is hard to pinpoint a specific coach. But to answer the question, my coach from high school who was not my position coach but nonetheless a coach, was the coach who started my work ethic. I was always hard working but had no direction. After my freshman year, coach introduced to the weight room and the jump rope. The one quote he told me was "The day you stop working hard is the day someone else will outwork you". All these years later, that quote still resonates with. I may not be the smartest one in the room but no-one will out work me. That has been my mentality sine my freshman year and continues to this day,

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I am a coach who loves to help people grow and get them results to the best of my ability. I will always meet people half way but the person I am helping has to meet the other half if this relationship is going to work. I am a firm believer, a person gets better by just showing up but they will get even better when they also work hard at their craft.

Also, I very personable and communicate well on my standards. You tell me what your goals are and we will get there together. When you commit I commit and we both work hard together. It is my job to EDUCATE, EMPOWER, and ELEVATE people and help them EXECUTE their goals in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.
