Over the past several decades girls’ participation in youth sports has grown dramatically across the United States. Increased access, cultural shifts, and new opportunities at the youth and high school levels are helping more young female athletes step onto fields, courts, and tracks than ever before.
Record Participation Highlights the Rise of Girls in High School Sports
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), more than 8.26 million students participated in high school athletics during the 2024–25 school year, the highest number ever recorded. A major driver of this growth has been the expansion of girls’ sports programs across the country. Participation among girls now totals about 3.4 million athletes, representing roughly 42.5% of all high school athletes in the U.S.
Several sports in particular have experienced rapid growth among female athletes. For example, girls’ flag football has surged in popularity, with participation increasing dramatically in recent years and some states adding it as an official high school sport. Similarly, girls’ wrestling has reached more than 74,000 participants nationwide, reflecting the expansion of opportunities in sports that were once dominated by boys’ programs. Traditional sports like track and field, volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball also continue to attract hundreds of thousands of female athletes each year.
Much of this progress can be traced back to the passage of Title IX, which prohibited gender discrimination in federally funded educational programs. Since its enactment, participation opportunities for girls in sports have increased by millions, opening doors for young women to develop athletic skills, leadership abilities, and confidence through competition. Research also shows that sports participation can have lasting benefits; for example, studies have found that 71% of women who played sports later held leadership roles in their careers.
Despite this progress, experts note that continued investment in youth sports programs is essential to sustain this growth and ensure equal access to training, coaching, and competition opportunities for girls across all communities.
Athletes Untapped is Paving the Way
Organizations across the youth sports landscape are working to support this momentum. Athletes Untapped is committed to helping young female athletes thrive by connecting them with private and elite training opportunities led by experienced coaches. Through personalized coaching sessions, girls can develop their skills, build confidence, and receive mentorship from athletes who understand the path to success.
In addition to supporting athletes, Athletes Untapped is also dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in coaching. The platform actively recruits and hires female coaches across all sports, helping create more role models and mentors for the next generation of athletes. By empowering both players and coaches, Athletes Untapped aims to contribute to a youth sports environment where girls have the resources, training, and leadership support they need to succeed on and off the field.
As participation continues to grow nationwide, initiatives like these play a critical role in ensuring that the future of youth sports remains inclusive, supportive, and full of opportunities for girls to reach their full potential.
