Work with a Private Ice Hockey Coach in Delaware County

You’ll hear five different answers if you ask five hockey parents at the rink after a late practice in Columbus.

The most grounded way to think about it is by session type rather than a single price tag. With Athletes Untapped coaches working with families in Delaware County, OH, beginner skating or puck-control sessions usually sit somewhere around $60–$100. Once you get into faster tempo work—edge instability drills, transition skating, or shooting off movement—that range tends to drift closer to $110–$165.

Then there’s the “season pressure” effect. Right before tryouts or tournament weekends, families often stack shorter sessions (sometimes $45–$70 per half-hour) just to sharpen one or two things quickly instead of doing full rebuilds.

Nobody really keeps talking about cost once a kid stops losing speed every time they touch the puck.

You can usually spot the right time for private hockey coaching before you can put it into words. It often becomes apparent when a player starts skating as if they’re a step behind the play—hesitating on turns, over-sliding stops, or avoiding contact in ways that disrupt their rhythm and confidence.

That’s often when families in Delaware County turn to Athletes Untapped coaches. Some athletes are just learning edge control and balance, while others are already competing in travel hockey but struggling to keep up with the pace of the game.

For younger players, the initial focus is often on building strong movement habits. Coaches help athletes stop under control, turn efficiently, and skate with their heads up instead of focusing solely on the puck. As players develop, the training evolves toward game-speed decision-making, puck protection, and learning how to recover after contact without falling out of the play.

Ultimately, age is less important than recognizing when hesitation starts affecting performance. That’s usually the point when individualized coaching can make the biggest difference.

Sometimes the need for private hockey coaching becomes obvious before anyone formally brings it up. A player may look comfortable during warmups, skating well and moving the puck effectively, but once the pace increases during a game, their confidence and decision-making begin to change. That’s often when families in Delaware County start exploring additional training options.

What Athletes Untapped coaches frequently address through private ice hockey coaching isn’t a lack of skill, but rather the ability to execute those skills under pressure. Instead of simply adding more drills, coaches focus on recreating game-like situations that help athletes become more comfortable making decisions at speed.

The improvements are often subtle at first. Players may begin staying in position more consistently, making cleaner decisions with the puck, and avoiding rushed plays when pressure builds. Over time, those small changes add up, and athletes start looking more composed and confident in competitive situations. Eventually, the game simply slows down for them, allowing their skills to show up when they matter most.

Most families don’t actually start with “finding a coach.” They start with frustration—something like “he looks great in practice but disappears in games.”

From there, it turns into a network search: teammates, rink parents, maybe a goalie they trust. That gets you names, but not necessarily direction.

Athletes Untapped handles it differently by matching Delaware County, OH players with our coaches based on what’s breaking down specifically—skating efficiency, puck handling under pressure, defensive gaps, or finishing speed. That distinction matters because hockey problems rarely fit into a single category.

So the decision isn’t about popularity. It’s about fit under game speed.

And when that match is right, you usually don’t need long explanations—ice time starts looking different almost immediately.

Forget the first five minutes of a lesson. Watch the moments right after something goes wrong.

Some coaches reset everything. Others talk through corrections. The ones families stick with through Athletes Untapped in Delaware County, OH usually do something more direct: they recreate the mistake at full speed and make the athlete solve it again immediately.

That difference matters more than any credential on paper.

You also want to notice whether the athlete starts skating differently without being told. Not harder—just cleaner. Less extra movement, fewer wasted strides, more direct routes through space.

Parents tend to describe it in rink language rather than technical terms: “he’s not fighting his edges anymore,” or “she looks like she finally has time with the puck.”

That’s usually the real signal the coaching is actually working.
