For the Emerson Basketball Team, i was a guard and sixth man for three 20+ win seasons, undefeated across 12 starts, and had two career double doubles, both times managing ten rebounds despite my 5'9'' height.
In high school, at Yorktown in Arlington, VA, I averaged 19 points per game en route to All-County honors in basketball, and scored 1.5 goals a game enroute to two District championships and First Team All-Region honors my senior year.
Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
Tough call between Hank Smith of Emerson College, and "Coach Joe" of the Braddock Road Condors. Smith has famously coached Sam Presti, Rob Hennigan, and my former teammate, WIll Dawkins, who have gone on to become NBA General Managers. All three men credit the coaching philosphopy of Smith to their success, and I too attribute much of my nuanced knowledged of the game to his teachings. He blends eccentricity with meticulous attention to detail and a tireless work ethic, and coached us in the 4-Out motion NBA teams run today, 10 years before it became commonly used across the league.
Coach Joe was a Nigerian soccer coach who helped propel my U14 travel soccer team to a national championship game in the Kellogs Cup. He was very different from the often animated Smith, but had a brilliant simplicity to his coaching technique that really helped me understand the broad stokes of the game before filling in the detail. A great motivator who also valued hard workers, and very nice human being as well.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
My most cherished possession are not the many awards or recognitions i recieved as a player, or even the titles I won, but instead a letter from a young fan who watched all of my high school basketball games and was inspired to be just like me. I truly enjoy inspiring kids to chase their dreams, and have lived a playbook that will enable them to do so. I have worked with children ages K-12 in several different capacities (teacher, coach, camp counselor, ect) and am able to connect with kids of all backgrounds.
Coaching Background
Summary of Coaching Background
I began coaching in high school, assiting in my own coaches winter and summer camps. I assisted my college coach in Olympic Development Program clinics after college, while also spearheading the GOALS prgram from underprivileged youth. I took a break from othe rprofessional endeavors in 2015 to coach the Sidwell Friends Girls JV team adn the the Menes Vasity at my alma mater Yortkown High School, before joining the Alexandria Soccer Association for the summer camps and winter futsal leagues. Additionally, I coached a colleague's son's youth basketball team from 8th through 12th grade. I am currently writing a book which aims to show coaches and athletes how to take skills and tactics learned from one sport and apply them to another.
How can you help someone improve their game?
It all starts with habits, reinforcing the good ones and eliminating the bad ones. This pertains to off the field/court (diet, exercise, school work), and on the field/court, (mechanics, vision, and efficiency). My goal is not to tell your son or daughter what the right play is in every situation, it is to give them the understanding of the game to correctly assess scenarios themselves. My ability to do so is what seperates myself from your average trainer or coach.
What does a typical training session look like?
We both arrive early and ready to work. We do a basic yet challenging warm up while recapping the previous sessions homework and additional questions. We then get right into a skill or set of skills that either the athlete wants to work, or one that i feel needs to be improved before building more advanced skills. Each session will consist of a physical training period to drive heart rate and add pressure to completeing a skill to end the day (pair of made free throws, for example).
