Being that you are here, it is clear that you are seeking improvement in some area of athletics. There is something you are striving for and you are willing to at least put the first foot forward. This fact makes you similar to a lot of men and women on this planet that have lofty athletic goals. I say this to ask, what is the difference maker between you reaching your goals or falling short? Why do some people get where they want to go and others end up watching someone else do it? I believe the answer to these questions are talent, mindset, and great coaching. Talent in sports is the ease in which an athlete executes the athletic movements/actions of their sport. Some kids come in with a lot of it and some come in with a little. It is their raw ability without any coaching. This can come from their environment and upbringing as well. Mindset is a players grit, determination, will, and ability to focus on the task(s) at hand. This trait is seen especially in adverse situations. This is similar to talent due to the fact that athletes naturally have stronger or weaker mindsets due to upbringing and environment. It differs from talent in the fact that it is a skill that can be improved upon from great coaching. Great coaching is something that is hard to come by. One has to first be coachable to receive great coaching. A great coach also has to understand the perspective of the individuals he is coaching. A great coach has seasoned eyes for the sport and sees the nuances of the game from the perspective of someone who has competed before. A great coach is able to take talent of any level, improve mindset, and teach the skills of the sport.

I was a four year Varsity player for the Central Dauphin Rams. During my time there I played Football as a three year starter, basketball as a two year starter, and did track and field for the school as well. I was recruited ultimately for football but I have always considered myself a multi sport athlete at heart. I went on to play football at Temple University for four years. I played on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker and our team was able to make two appearances at the post season bowl games held each year. I graduated from the university with a bachelors degree in kinesiology ( the study of human movement). This was the perfect degree to educate me as a trainer and master of movement skill. I now am a coach and educator in my own community and seek to achieve much more.
By providing the environment, verbal cues, and demanding high level effort/focus. As a coach it is a blessing to be able to show the athlete how to do exactly what you want them to perform. I do my best to keep myself in decent shape and continuously sharpen my own tools. I am personally still invested in growing in the game of basketball which is why am able to help others grow at the level they are at. I have been there and have done the heavy lifting for them already. All I have to do is provide the training, understanding, and oversight.
For me as a player, I hated doing things that I did not feel would translate to the game. A lot of the reason I would feel that way is because of a lack of understanding. This is why I would want athletes to know what they were in for, why they were doing it, and how it will change their game all before hand.
Once there is an understanding from the athlete, we would walk and talk through whatever exercise/drill/movement we were going to do. I am a firm believer in doing things slow until mastery in efforts to not miss any nuances of what is being performed.
Once the athlete understands and can perform the movement well enough, the pressure comes. Some type of adversity will be demanded from them. This could be performance under fatigue, performance under mental duress, or performance under time constraint, etc.
I got my first taste of coaching experience during my undergraduate studies at Temple University. There was an 8th grade girls team that needed a coach and I needed the experience. Our team was able to win a championship my first year( I have photos!) My next experience would not come until years later where I was the Varsity Linebackers coach for the school that I work at. We made a deep playoff run, had several players finish with all conference/all state honors, and finished 12-1 on the year My most recent experience and probably the most relevant would be my time as a head coach for the school 9th grade basketball team. Our team was able to win 16 out of 19 games, develop skills for jv/varsity next year, and have a ton of fun.
The best coach I have ever had here on earth was David Feeley. This was my strength and conditioning coach at Temple University. He was a great coach because he demanded coach ability, was excellent at understanding what verbal/non verbal cues were necessary for each athlete, and was able to clearly explain/demonstrate the purpose of what he was teaching. David Feeley was highly emotionally intelligent and was able to duplicate that in his students.
I will always bring faith, passion, and a little edge to whatever I am doing. Athletes, parents, and anyone that I deal with will be given my respect as I demand theirs. It is all from a place of love and genuine desire to help people improve at the sports I love so much.
