I am a former Division I and professional baseball player who greatly benefited, both on and off the field, from sport psychology training while at UC Davis. Now, with a master's degree in Sport and Performance Psychology, I have worked with athletes and first responders from the youth to professional levels, helping them develop the mental skills necessary to thrive in the adversity-filled world of sports. Throughout my playing career, it became clear to me that no matter how much physical work an athlete puts in, peak performance under pressure is impossible without the right mental skills. Together, we can work to eliminate mental blocks, build a healthier relationship with your sport, and enhance overall performance. There are so many topics within the field of sport psychology. Some apply to certain athletes more than others. But at the end of the day, my goal is to help athletes become more confident, smooth, and decisive while under pressure. This allows for an athlete to reach "flow state," or a headspace where a performer has maximum confidence, trust in themselves/team, and zero doubt what's about to happen when they step into competition!

Get to know Coach Matt

About Me:

I am a former Northern California High School Player of the Year (2016) while at Castro Valley High School. I was recruited to UC Davis, and greatly enjoyed my time there as a student and athlete on the baseball team. I then played professionally in the Pecos League, before returning to school to obtain my masters in Sport Psychology.

I have been an invited guest speaker for the Riverside Police Department, and multiple other collegiate athletic programs to discuss proper team dynamics and mental performance techniques.

I was the first psychology graduate student selected by my university to work for the Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges as a mental performance intern. It's now an ongoing program as it proved to be very effective

How I can help you improve your game:

I ask the right questions to help somebody understand how they generally react while under pressure. Having this refection or anticipation period will allow for athletes to be more mindful of their physical and mental reactions. We then work through them, and in game perform performance will almost certainly increase with a more mentally aware, mature, and confident athlete.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

We discuss the confidentiality agreement within the realm of psychology. (Everything stays between us to an extent) We then get into the athletes general struggles and strengths while in practice or in games. This leads to certain activities, stories, and exercises to help us better understand, and fix these potential issues.

Career summary and accomplishments:

I have worked with athletes and first responders of all ages develop their mental performance skills. I have spent the last few years working at the university level with Claremont Mckenna and Pomona Pitzer, but now am looking to bring my time and work back to all levels of sports.

Best coach I ever had:

Tom Graham was a coach of mine from when I was 12 to 16. I felt he was great at promoting inspiring baseball, and always lead from alongside with actions, rather than out front with words. We won a lot with him, and 10 out of the 12 players on our team went on to play at the division 1 level.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I believe every player has a unique path to becoming the best athlete they can, and that uniqueness should be embraced. The two most important skills I have developed in this career have been empathy and storytelling. As a former athlete, I feel its much easier for me to build rapport with my clients, and put myself in their shoes. I commonly tells stories from my own playing career to help the sport psychology concepts we discuss come to life.

Hobbies of mine include surfing and skiing, and I would describe myself as optimistic and easy going.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.
