Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
The best coach I have ever had will be my current one at Cal Poly Pomona, Wes Ashford. I came in naive about everything running related and he quickly helped me obsess about the sport and elevate my running knowledge, mental strength, training, work ethic, being a competitor, etc. As for tangible results I came in running 9:32 (3200m) and 4:30 (1600m) in high school to running at the 2023 USATF U-20 5k Championships placing 5th in a time of 14:22 (4:37 mile pace) within 1 year.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
I believe that becoming a great runner is about more than just logging in the miles and instead my coaching offers an all-in-one resource that educates my athletes on every facet of running:
- Workout Wisdom: I will provide detailed descriptions of various running workouts explaining their purpose and how they fit into overall training goals. I will help you understand not just the what, but the why behind every session.
- Running Tips & Tricks: I will provide you with all the little science-backed tips I have learned throughout the duration of my career. I have used/ continue to use these same mechanisms.
- Injury Prevention: I will include strength training to help reduce injury and enhance performance. I will also teach proper warm up and cool down routines, activation drills, and more.
- Form Mastery: Running form is critical for efficiency and injury prevention and I will offer insights to perfect this.
- Nutrition Tailored to Performance: Fueling the body properly can be a game change and I will ensure my athletes are fueling to compete at their very best.
- Balanced Lifestyle: Running should enhance life, not overwhelm it. I help athletes balance training with school, jobs, social activities, and overall stress management.
Coaching Background
Summary of Coaching Background
I have experience coaching my high school team writing the weekly training plan for the entire team which saw everyone on the team improve their times in cross country by more than 30 seconds each. I am currently running in the NCAA and haven't taken up coaching as my profession but I do plan on doing so. At the moment I have worked with / worked alongside top-level coaches who have all had experience at the professional, NCAA, and high school level.
How can you help someone improve their game?
I have a very dynamic training philosophy which embraces a holistic, individualized approach. Every single athlete is different but I will work with them to provide the results they desire. Running is life's greatest metaphor and you can learn everything you need to know about life by learning about running and vice versa.
What does a typical training session look like?
A session will vary depending on the individual, where they are in their running journey, and their next competition. A typical training session will begin with a warm up, some dynamic/static stretching, some easy strides/sprints, the running workout, a cool down, and some strength/core work.
Throughout the session, I will provide a calm and relaxed environment, give detailed instructions, and just have fun with the athlete.
