If you’re looking for first class field hockey training in the Sacramento area, look no further. I am a former collegiate field hockey player, current multilingual teacher. I played in college in the USA and in Chile. I trained at the Olympic level, which taught me resilience and discipline. Now, I train first time players, elite athletes and everything in between. I think field hockey is a dynamic sport that deserves to be shared with all.

A former college field hockey player, Phoebe started her field hockey journey as a middle-schooler on the East Coast. Her dedication to mastering the fundamentals helped Phoebe build a strong foundation of skills, and she was often lauded for her textbook execution of various hits, lifts and dodges. In high school, her hard work paid off. Phoebe played left defense, stopping opponents in their tracks with her experience, athleticism and game sense. In the off seasons, she trained with the Futures Program, USA field hockey’s Olympic development program. In 2013, Phoebe was named All-League for her defensive abilities and leadership both on and off the field. Her passion for travel and love for field hockey led her to enroll at Wesleyan University. Phoebe played collegiate field hockey for three seasons, and played an extra season of hockey when she studied abroad in Chile. Her South American teammates were members of the national team, inspiring her to someday use field hockey and language as tools to generate connection and build community. In Phoebe’s personal life, she has completed two marathons and is currently planning her next one. She has a young daughter who she hopes will someday learn field hockey, too!
I am able to expertly break down complex skills into basic movements, guiding players through the learning process. I am infinitely patient and my belief in my players helps them to self-motivate and persist when the going gets tough. My teaching experience allows me to coach all age levels in a developmentally appropriate way.
Ages 10-18
Warm-up: stretching, session goals
Persist: practice skills with repetition
Focus: practice one skill in pursuit of further understanding and improvement
Learn: do something new
Apply: cardio, testing and trying out all skills
Cool-down: stretching, long-term goals
Ages 5-10: stretching and icebreakers, silly games to familiarize ourselves with our equipment, practicing basic skills, learning new skills, and learning fun games that allow players to apply new and basic skills.
The only field hockey coaching experience I have is completely informal. My experience as an elementary school teacher, youth sports referee, camp counselor, nanny and mom is what gives me my coaching superpowers. I am kind, patient, humble and respectful. I believe in going slow to go fast, and in the importance of building a foundation of fundamental skills. I understand that the most crucial part of being a coach is fostering a love for the sport and prioritizing the joy and self-esteem of my players. Field hockey is, first and foremost, fun!
My high school coach, Sarah Merullo, brought out the best in me and made me see myself as a great player who could have a future in field hockey. She was a recent college graduate with incredible experience and abilities as a player and leader. She was also our Spanish teacher, having majored in Spanish language. She valued hard work and practicing your basics. She showed me the importance of integrity and perseverance. I ended up playing in the same collegiate league that she had played in (she had graduated from Bates College, which is in the NESCAC) and I also majored in Spanish language before becoming a Spanish teacher, myself.
I am bilingual. I teach Spanish as a second language, and I have taught / I am certified to teach English as a Second language. If Spanish is your first language and you’d like to learn how to play field hockey in Spanish, I am here to make this sport accessible to you. If you’d like to learn Spanish or English through playing field hockey, I offer sessions that include light language learning.

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.
Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.
Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!
We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.
Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.
Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.
The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.
Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.
