I help athletes transform their minds into their greatest asset. Using evidence-based techniques from sport psychology and performance counseling, I teach tools that build focus, confidence, and resilience—helping you perform at your best instead of being held back from your true potential. I’m Miles O’Neill, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Mental Performance Counselor with a unique perspective shaped by my experience as a former Division I athlete, Texas UIL 800-meter state champion, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and coach at both the high school and collegiate levels. My approach combines firsthand athletic experience with advanced clinical training to create practical, results-driven strategies tailored to each athlete. I specialize in sport counseling and performance psychology, helping athletes overcome challenges such as performance anxiety, fear of reinjury, and burnout. Trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), I use this evidence-based approach to help athletes recover psychologically, regain confidence, and thrive under pressure. My goal is simple: to help you perform freely, recover faster, and build the mental edge that elevates both your game and your love for your sport.

I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and I still train like one. Weight training, Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and ultramarathons keep me grounded in the skillsI teach. I love testing my limits and learning what the mind and body are truly capable of.
Before becoming a mental performance counselor, I was a Division I runner and Texas state champion in the 800 meters. Competing and coaching at both the high school and college levels gave me a front-row seat to the mental battles athletes face every day. Those experiences, along with my time serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, created a passion for helping athletes gain a mental edge in their sport.
Outside of work, I’m a husband, father, and lifelong student of performance.
My approach is based on a structured, evidence-based framework that develops athletes who are mentally composed, physically prepared, spiritually grounded, and emotionally resilient. Whether you’re performing at your peak or working through a challenge, this model helps you reach and sustain your best.
Together, we build the habits, mindset, and emotional control that drive consistent performance. Training focuses on four key areas:
Preparation: Establish routines that improve energy, focus, and balance through sleep, nutrition, and daily discipline.
Composure: Learn to regulate body and emotion under pressure using tools like breathwork, HRV training, and trauma-informed recovery.
Attention Control: Strengthen focus and adaptability with mindfulness, awareness drills, and flow-based exercises.
Thought Management: Rebuild belief systems and confidence through visualization, reframing, and identity-based self-talk.
Each phase enhances performance capacity, resilience, and purpose, helping athletes not only perform better, but feel better while doing it. Together, we build habits and mindset strategies that enhance performance, resilience, and overall enjoyment of sport.
Every session follows a structured rhythm designed to teach, practice, and apply a mental skill that aligns with your current performance phase. Sessions usually last around 50 minutes and include:
Education: We introduce one evidence-based performance concept—something that connects to your current goals or challenges (e.g., attention control, intensity regulation, or reframing).
In-Session Training: You’ll actively practice the skill through guided drills—like breath control, mindfulness, visualization, or dual-task exercises—that mirror sport situations.
Reflection: We integrate the lesson into your unique athletic identity through short reflection prompts or mental mapping.
Application Plan: You’ll leave each session with a clear, sport-specific strategy to apply in practice and competition.
Over time, sessions progress through the four phases of optimal performance—laying a foundation of wellness and preparation, then building composure, focus, and belief. The end goal an athlete who performs freely, consistently, and with purpose.
Miles O'Neill is a Doctoral candidate at the University of Alabama, where his doctoral research explores the use of EMDR therapy to enhance psychological recovery and performance in athletes. A former Division I track and field athlete and Texas UIL 800-meter state champion, Miles combines firsthand athletic experience with advanced clinical training. His work with the University of Alabama Athletic Department provided opportunities to support NCAA athletes in developing focus, resilience, and mental recovery following injury and adversity. As a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and former Lieutenant, Miles directed behavioral health programs for service members across California, giving him deep insight into performance under pressure, leadership, and resilience training. He continues to pursue growth as an endurance and combat sport athlete, training in ultramarathons, Muay Thai kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which keep him connected to the discipline and self-awareness he teaches every day.
My high school track and cross country coaches, Josh and Amy Stewart, who, through patience and presence, helped me develop as a runner, believe in myself, and come to faith.
I approach every athlete as a whole person, not just a performer. My goal is to help you develop mental tools that improve not only your sport but your life: confidence, composure, and clarity that last far beyond competition.
Parents can expect professionalism, collaboration, and an emphasis on both mental skill development and athletic growth. I combine science-backed methods with real athletic experience to help athletes enjoy their sport while achieving meaningful results.
