Why Train With Me?

Hi! Your youth athlete should train with me primarily because I design and tailor whatever the athlete's specific needs are according to the demands of their sport while also making them a better overall athlete. My focus is to always assess, learn, study and formulate training plans that are structured to promote both athletic and psychological/mental development to not only foster physical improvement, but to also understand WHY what we are doing is necessary in order to help the athlete become more educated, competent and more self assured.

Athletic Background

Summary of Career and Accomplishments
Athletic career was always centered around speed. Played football, basketball, soccer and ran track in junior high school then focused on football and indoor/outdoor track and field in high school. Also ran track in college for one season at the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where the focus and training was on the 400m until I suffered an injury that cut my career short.
Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
The best coach I ever had was my junior high school track coach John Hunsucker. Even though we were only in the 8th and 9th grade our practices were structured with a heavy degree of difficulty where we had to hit interval timings, understand pacing and tempo by running as 400m rabbits for the milers and relay competitions during practice were intense and hotly contested. By the time we got to the actual meets we were so prepared our entire team rarely lost any events and if we did we would consistency fill up most of the top 5 places. Coach Hunsucker also got to know each of us kids on a personal level and that made us both better athletes and people as well.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
Simple. I care about your kid as if they were my own. When you come to my training you become part of my family and I'm the coach who stays positively concerned about your growth, development and athletic success. Once I learn what your youth athlete needs I'm also that guy who stays up late developing the training modalities that will get him/her where they need to be. Every kid I train has slightly different needs so it's imperative that those are identified and addressed, and that's the least any well intended coach should be able to do to serve the kids and not their own ego.

Coaching Background

Summary of Coaching Background
I have been a youth track and field coach for the past 5 years and have been a head track and field coach for the past 3 years. Specialty is in speed development, neuromuscular and strength training, energy system cultivation and movement pattern correction to develop and improve overall athleticism.
How can you help someone improve their game?
Lots of time is spent assessing the athlete and creating metrics and milestones to show measurable improvements in performance. There is also the psychological side of understanding the mental makeup of the athlete and time is spent sharpening that as well.
What does a typical training session look like?
Depends on the needs of the athlete but typically a warmup to set the table for the other drills/training of the day. We then move into plyometrics, resistance and age appropriate strength training, technical training for movement patterns and specific energy system components are interwoven within the training. All of this is incorporated into practice themes for each session such as training for linear or multidirectional speed and agility, limb velocity, sport specific movement learning, acceleration and max velocity techniques. All of these may not be covered in each practice but the overarching principle of building a progression of development is always at play.
