Let's work together to become the best mental version of your athletic self

Hey everyone! My name is Josh, I am a 26 year old athlete-turned mental performance coach in the Tacoma/Seattle area. I graduated from Ithaca College with my Master's of Science in Sport Psychology, and my full time position is training soldiers in mental performance skills, however my love for athletics always takes me back to wanting to work with athletes. My goal working with youth athletes is to hone in on how utilizing different mental performance skills such as breathing, imagery, mindfulness, and attention control can help young athletes excel at their current sport. I look forward to working with you to become the best version of yourself mentally to bring the best version of yourself physically to the field, rink, court, etc.

Get to know Coach Joshua

About Me:

-Master of Science degree in Sport Psychology

-18+ years of soccer experience (recreational), mixed amount of experience in hockey, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, and football

-2+ years working with soldiers training mental performance skills

-4+ years playing ultimate frisbee, captaining my last year

How I can help you improve your game:

I can help someone improve their game in various ways:

-Deliberate breathing: taking deliberate breaths at different points before a performance has plenty of benefits (think a soccer player before a free-kick/penalty kick, a golfer before taking their swing, or a basketball player before a free-throw)

-Imagery: the mind and body connection is very real - when our brains think about doing a specific thing, our body reacts even though we are not doing said thing. By just thinking about executing a performance effectively, we can perform better when the real thing comes, while also managing nerves

-Attention control: multitasking is not as easy as we think it can be. In fact, our brain can only attend to one thing at a time, and athletes need to have the ability to switch attention fast and accurately. Additionally, is what we are focusing on in the moment effective for our game? Are we thinking about what we want to happen, or what we don't want to happen (there's a big difference)

-Mindfulness: as an athlete, it can be tough to get caught up in the moment of not playing up to your standard, and that's okay. What's important is how you recover from those moments, and focusing on the present, or the next performance. Mindfulness grounds you in the present to avoid thinking about past mistakes or future worries

-Other skills include: internal motivation, team building, progressive muscle relaxation, mindset, self-talk, building a pre-performance routine, and reframing thoughts

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Typical training sessions can look different day to day. The first session will be an intake of understanding the athlete's needs and where they'd like to get better. Sessions after this can be in person or over Zoom. These can either be:

-Update sessions: letting me know how things are going and where they can make tweaks to what they already know

or

-Active teaching days: directly teaching a skill and working together to figure out where we can apply it

Career summary and accomplishments:

-My current full-time position is training mental performance skills with soldiers, which I've done for 2.5 years -During grad school I worked with Ithaca College's tennis and golf teams to enhance mental performance -I also coached soccer for 2-8 year olds

Best coach I ever had:

Best coach I've had was one of my recreational soccer coaches growing up. This coach had great knowledge of the game, was level-headed, and wanted to win while also knowing how to have fun. As a coach, it's important to learn from mistakes and do better the next time around which was this coach's whole philosophy

What athletes and parents should know about me:

As a mental performance coach, my philosophy is to work with your athlete to understand where they're struggling in their mental game as well as what they already do well. I work with an athlete as a team to enhance mental performance through various skills such as mindfulness, deliberate breathing, imagery, self-talk, attention control, and more. My plan is to teach different mental skills, working with the athlete to determine where it best fits in to their game making necessary adjustments as time goes on.

The end goal is to work myself out of a job - if I'm doing my job correctly, there will be a time in which I am no longer needed

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you find yourself needing to cancel or adjust your booking within 24 hours of your purchase, just let us know. We'll provide a refund - no questions asked. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're here to support your learning journey.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
