Get to know Coach Henry

About Me:

My direct experience teaching is within the 3-10 age range. Teaching children to swim is one of the top 3 most fulfilling things I’ve done in my 33 years.

My own experience was as a high-level competitor with Spare Time Aquatics Sacramento where I myself was taught by olympic-level coaches. I have the experience and knowledge to bring young swimmers success right up to the fringes of the collegiate level.

Overall, what you’ll receive from me is diligence, attention to detail, a solid skillset and love for the job.

How I can help you improve your game:

First and foremost, focusing the mind. There's no better teacher for a coach like myself to learn patience and focus than from a child. One cannot learn to swim until they learn to float. One cannot learn to float until they learn to relax. So I always begin with the mind, techniques to simply feel comfortable and relaxed in the water without forcing these ideas of SWIMMING on them.

For adults and teens, we can usually go straight into techniques. For example, the angle of the arm when pulling down on a stroke (angled or straight?), or the posture of the head (down or up?), or the use of the legs (are they straight, are they continuous, is there white water?)

What a typical training session looks like with me:

For a child new to swimming:

1) Learning to float

2) Head in the water, eyes looking DOWN at the pool floor

3) Intro to basic movement

For child experienced in swimming:

1) Free-swim warmup

2) kick-board to get legs moving correctly

3) One stroke focus per lesson (freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke)

For Adults looking to improve technique, the program is similar, but there's a little more leeway. Adults, while learning, tend to know what they need or want for themselves. While I find it beneficial to focus on one stroke per lesson, I have also worked on multiple strokes per lesson depending on the ask.

Career summary and accomplishments:

I've been a swim instructor for 3 years. Most of my experience is with children 3-10. I have some adult clients looking to improve their technique. I am welcoming age ranges of 10-17 looking to achieve the collegiate level.

Best coach I ever had:

I'll never forget Coach Ryan who introduced me to competitive swimming when I was a freshman in high school. I was a bit of an overweight kid. I wasn't the fastest or the strongest. And I was a late bloomer compared to many of my teammates. But he showed me acceptance and patience, and so I took to competitive swimming thanks to him.

Coach Junior was the one that pushed me to my limits. He was very tough man from Brazil. I'll never forget the first time he made me do butterfly for an hour straight. The kind of shape he whipped me into, the thresholds he pushed my mind through is the reason I'm an athlete today. It's thanks to him that I can continue to push myself physically.

Lastly, an important boxing coach I had, Freddie Norwood. In my early twenties he pushed me to the newest levels of my powers, carrying on the work of my previous coaches, finalizing the strength of a young adult.

Usually our athletic journeys are defined by only a few coaches, sometimes only one! But the story here is that it's a journey, that growth of the body and the mind requires different perspectives, mindsets. Sometimes nurturing, sometimes hard-nosed.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I'm a good example of why it's not a bad thing to be a late bloomer. In high school I struggled with my weight and didn't finish growing into myself until around the age of 20! At 33 I'm the strongest I've ever been and am continuing to peek thanks to my ability (taught by coaches) to push myself physically and remain mindful of technique. To this day, I am only getting faster and stronger. In a way, I too am still on a journey of growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.
