I am a former two-time U.S. National Team member, multiple-time U.S. Open champion & record holder, and a U.S. Olympic Trials finalist in the 400 IM. At the height of my career, I was ranked 9th in the world in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 IM. As a collegiate swimmer at the University of Arizona, I was a team captain, 10-time All-American, and a 2008 NCAA team champion. I also earned first-team Academic All-American honors and multiple postgraduate scholarships.
I help athletes overcome mental barriers through a structured, science-backed approach. My proprietary goal-setting program, 'The Six Questions,' helps athletes create a clear roadmap to success. I also use mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral techniques to build confidence, manage performance anxiety, and develop a resilient mindset. Whether you’re struggling with a plateau, coming back from an injury, or just want a mental edge, I provide tools and strategies to help you stay focused, motivated, and in control under pressure.
A typical session starts with assessing where the athlete currently stands—what’s working, what’s not, and what mental skills need development. From there, we’ll use my goal-setting framework, 'The Six Questions,' to create a plan tailored to their needs. Depending on the athlete, we might focus on strategies for handling performance pressure, overcoming fear, developing pre-competition routines, or regaining confidence post-injury. Each session is interactive, practical, and designed to give athletes immediate tools they can apply in training and competition.
I have over a decade of experience coaching at the NCAA Division 1 level, working with Olympians, NCAA champions, and elite performers. Currently, I serve as Associate Head Coach for UNC Swimming and Diving. Three years ago, I started a mental performance coaching company called Doc Brown Performance where I have been working with athletes from all different ages and sport backgrounds. Previously, I coached at the University of Missouri, where I worked with multiple NCAA champions, U.S. National Team members, and other international swimmers on the world's biggest stages. In addition, I’ve conducted workshops and individual coaching for athletes across various sports, helping them develop the mental skills to perform under pressure. Prior to my college coaching career, I coached both age-group (14&U), senior (15-18), and master (22+) level athletes.
The best coach I ever had was Frank Busch. He believed that character was the foundation of high performance. To him, winning didn’t just happen at the meet—it was a reflection of how you lived every single day. He emphasized that athletes needed to live a championship lifestyle all the time, not just when they were competing. His ability to instill discipline, accountability, and belief in his athletes shaped not only my career but also my approach as a coach and mental performance specialist. His philosophy continues to influence how I help athletes build resilience and mental toughness.
I’ve been in your shoes—I was one of the best swimmers in the world in my events, but I still struggled with the mental game. That struggle motivated me to earn a PhD in sport psychology so I could help athletes master their mindset. I work with athletes of all levels, from those experiencing performance plateaus to those looking to gain a competitive edge before struggles arise. My approach is tailored, practical, and results-driven, designed to build confidence, resilience, and focus.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!
We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.
Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.
Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.
