Get to know Coach Jim

About Me:

I am a lifelong runner, student of the sport, and active practitioner. I've coached athletes to state championships in cross country and indoor & outdoor track. My athletes have run at the NCAA D1, D2 and D3 levels. I have also proudly helped brand-new runners (of all ages) complete their first 5k and fall in love with this lifelong sport.

I am a former high school varsity cross country and track runner, specializing in 800m - 3200m. I completed my first marathon when I was 14 years old and have run over 30 marathons. In college, I competed as a Nordic skier and returned to competitive running post-collegiately. I had the privilege to work with legendary coach, Jack Daniels PhD, and integrated his physiology-driven approach to my own coaching strategy.

I carry my passion for running to my full-time pursuit as owner and proprietor of Valley Forge Running Company. I outfit all types of runners with carefully curated performance footwear to help them train injury free.

How I can help you improve your game:

I can help someone improve by empowering them with the belief that they are capable of achieving their goals through a systematic progressive training program that builds confidence and athletic ability. The training is based on proven physiologically driven training that includes the research and approaches of renowned coaches and exercise scientists including Arthur Lydiard (New Zealand), Bill Bowerman ( U Oregon, Nike), Bill Dellinger (U Oregon), Renato Canova (Itallk/Kenya/Ethiopia), Jack Daniels (USA), Mark Wetmore (U Colorado), Mike Smith (NAU), Steve Magness (Nike, U Huston), John Marcus (Portland State), Jay Dicharry (Dr. of PT), and others.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

A typical training session starts with a debrief of your practice and activity since the last training session--what's going well and what isn't going well. We address any questions or concerns, including any changes that have arisen. Next, we review the workout scheduled for that day, and most importantly, its purpose.

Workouts start with an easy 5- to 10-minute warmup run (if experienced). Next are a series of active mobility exercises including dynamic drills. Short strides are next, about 20 seconds in duration. Then we will progress through the main body of the workout. Training sessions usually end in some additional strides or hill sprints, then a cool down run and static stretching. We'll review how aspects of the workout went and make a specific plan for what's next.

Career summary and accomplishments:

I've been coaching for 10+ years. I am the former head coach of William Tennent High School cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams, head coach of Newtown Friends School's cross country team, head coach of St. Catherine of Siena School (NC) cross country team as well as Assistant Coach of Archbishop Wood High School cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams. Most recently, I've worked one-on-one with adults and student athletes as an individual Performance Coach, guiding runners to meet their individual goals.

Best coach I ever had:

The best coach I have ever was my high school running coach, John McGory. He was an inspirational support for everyone on the team, despite their ability. He motivated us to push beyond what we thought we were capable of and spoke from the perspective of a very successful runner. As an active practitioner of competitive running, and a passionate one, his advice and guidance came from the heart.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

Part of my philosophy of coaching is making sure the athletes I am working with understand the "why" for everything that I ask them to do--from rest days to hill sprints to weekly and monthly cycles of training. Without that understanding, something gets lost and the coaching is not as effective. I am experienced coaching based on running pace, RPE (rate of perceived effort), heart rate, and power. I'm excited to share what each means and how it will make a difference in how you train.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you find yourself needing to cancel or adjust your booking within 24 hours of your purchase, just let us know. We'll provide a refund - no questions asked. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're here to support your learning journey.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
