About Me:

I have a strong background in basketball, having played for four years in high school, including two years on the Junior Varsity team and two years on Varsity, primarily as a shooting guard and also as a point guard. My strengths lie in my shooting ability and understanding of the game, emphasizing the importance of playing basketball the right way with a focus on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Throughout my basketball career, I have honed not only my skills on the court but also my leadership abilities, which I bring to coaching.

How I can help you improve your game:

1. Assessing Current Skill Level

Initial Evaluation: Start by assessing the player’s current strengths and weaknesses. This can be done through drills and scrimmages that focus on key areas such as shooting, dribbling, passing, defense, and understanding of the game.

Feedback Session: Have an open discussion with the player about their self-perceived strengths and areas they feel need improvement. This builds trust and gives insight into their mindset and goals.

2. Personalized Training Plan

Targeted Skill Development: Create a training plan that addresses specific needs. If a player needs to improve their shooting, include drills that focus on shooting form, range, and consistency. For ball handling, incorporate dribbling drills that challenge their control and speed.

Progressive Challenges: Gradually increase the complexity of drills as the player improves, ensuring they are constantly challenged and engaged. This might involve adding a defender to shooting drills or increasing the speed of dribbling exercises.

3. Technique and Fundamentals

Focus on Fundamentals: Reinforce the importance of fundamentals, such as proper shooting form, defensive stance, and footwork. Consistent practice of these basics is key to long-term improvement.

Correcting Mistakes: Provide immediate and constructive feedback during drills. Show the player how to correct mistakes and reinforce good habits. Use demonstrations and video analysis if possible to help them visualize proper techniques.

4. Game Situations and Decision-Making

Simulated Game Scenarios: Practice drills that mimic real-game situations, such as fast breaks, pick-and-rolls, and defensive switches. This helps the player understand how to apply their skills effectively during a game.

Basketball IQ: Teach the player how to read the game better, including recognizing defensive setups, making smart passes, and finding scoring opportunities. Encourage thinking one step ahead and making quick, informed decisions.

5. Mental and Emotional Preparation

Building Confidence: Work on mental toughness and confidence. Praise effort and improvement, not just successful outcomes. Encourage players to view mistakes as learning opportunities.

Resilience and Focus: Teach techniques for staying focused and composed, especially under pressure. This can include breathing exercises, visualization of successful plays, and positive self-talk.

6. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Integration

Leadership and Teamwork: Incorporate discussions on the importance of being a team player and a leader on and off the court. Help the player understand the value of communication, supporting teammates, and demonstrating sportsmanship.

Handling Pressure: Use role-playing scenarios to teach players how to handle pressure situations, like taking the final shot or maintaining composure when the game is intense.

7. Regular Feedback and Goal Setting

Consistent Check-Ins: Regularly discuss progress with the player, providing specific feedback on what they’ve improved and what still needs work. This keeps them motivated and aware of their development.

Short and Long-Term Goals: Help the player set realistic and measurable goals. Short-term goals could include mastering a new move or improving shooting percentage, while long-term goals might involve making the varsity team or becoming a team leader.

8. Encouraging Independent Practice

Homework Drills: Give the player drills they can practice on their own outside of training sessions. This promotes discipline and accelerates improvement.

Film Study: Encourage the player to watch basketball games and analyze how top players perform. This can provide inspiration and practical examples of how to apply skills effectively.

9. Emphasizing Enjoyment of the Game

Keep it Fun: While improvement is the goal, ensure that the training process is enjoyable. A love for the game will naturally lead to a desire to practice and improve.

Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge progress and milestones, no matter how small. Celebrating success keeps the player motivated and reinforces the value of hard work.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Dynamic Stretching: Begin with a dynamic warm-up to increase blood flow and prepare the body. Include exercises like high knees, butt kicks, lunges, and arm circles.

Light Dribbling: Incorporate simple dribbling drills (e.g., walking while dribbling, figure-eight dribbling) to get the hands and feet coordinated.

2. Skill Assessment (5 minutes)

Quick Evaluation: Start with a few basic drills to assess the player’s current skill level in dribbling, shooting, and defense. This helps tailor the rest of the session to their specific needs.

3. Ball Handling and Dribbling (15 minutes)

Basic to Advanced Drills: Focus on ball-handling drills to improve control and agility. This can include stationary drills (e.g., crossover, behind-the-back, between-the-legs) and movement drills (e.g., dribbling through cones, zigzag dribbling).

Pressure Situations: Introduce light pressure situations to simulate game conditions, such as dribbling with a hand in the face or with a defender's presence.

4. Shooting Practice (20 minutes)

Form Shooting: Start close to the basket to work on shooting form and mechanics, focusing on follow-through and consistency.

Spot Shooting: Move to various spots on the floor (e.g., corners, elbows, three-point line) to practice shooting from different distances and angles.

Off-the-Dribble Shooting: Practice pulling up for shots off the dribble to simulate game-like situations. Include one-dribble and two-dribble pull-ups.

5. Offensive Moves (15 minutes)

1-on-1 Moves: Teach and practice key offensive moves like jab steps, crossovers, spin moves, and step-backs to create space from defenders.

Finishing at the Rim: Work on different types of layups (e.g., regular, reverse, floater) and finishing through contact to enhance scoring ability in the paint.

6. Defense and Conditioning (10 minutes)

Defensive Stance: Focus on defensive footwork, including slides and backpedaling. Emphasize staying low and balanced.

Agility Drills: Use agility ladder drills or cone drills to improve foot speed and reaction time, which are critical for both offense and defense.

7. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Integration (5 minutes)

Mindset Check: Have a brief conversation about mental aspects like confidence, handling mistakes, and setting personal goals. Discuss the importance of a positive mindset and how it impacts performance.

Visualization: Spend a few minutes on visualization exercises, encouraging the player to imagine themselves successfully executing skills and plays.

8. Cool Down (5 minutes)

Static Stretching: End the session with static stretching to prevent injuries and promote flexibility. Focus on the major muscle groups used during the workout.

Breathing and Relaxation: Include deep breathing exercises to help the player relax and recover mentally after the intense workout.

9. Feedback and Goal Setting (5 minutes)

Performance Feedback: Provide constructive feedback on the player’s performance during the session, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.

Goal Setting: Set specific goals for the next session or areas to work on independently. Encourage the player to reflect on what they learned and how they can apply it in games.

Career summary and accomplishments:

In my coaching role, I developed a one-month basketball program that goes beyond the sport by integrating essential life skills into training. This program emphasizes leadership, character-building, and teamwork, helping young athletes grow both as players and individuals. By incorporating elements of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), my approach ensures that participants gain confidence, learn effective communication, and develop a strong sense of personal responsibility. My goal is to serve as a mentor and positive role model, guiding young athletes toward success both on and off the court.

Best coach I ever had:

Chris Torrence stands out as the best coach I’ve had due to his exceptional approach to coaching and player development. He fostered an environment where making mistakes was part of the learning process, allowing us to grow and improve without fear of judgment. His focus on building confidence in each player was instrumental in helping us reach our potential. Unlike many coaches who prioritize physical attributes like height and skillset, Coach Torrence valued determination and hard work above all. He believed in looking beyond appearances to see the true potential in every player, encouraging us to push our limits and strive for excellence. His supportive and insightful coaching style made a lasting impact on both our performance and personal growth.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I bring a passion for the game, a focus on character development, and a commitment to helping young athletes grow both on and off the court. My coaching style emphasizes leadership, discipline, and building confidence, creating a positive and supportive environment for players to reach their full potential.

After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.
