It’s more than having played a sport. It’s building the best human possible

My first foray into sport began at 3 with the sport of baseball. It continued up to high school as I attempted to perfect a swing and throw the perfect curveball. At the age of 17 I dropped out of high school to pursue studies in health and fitness. Since then, I have learned under the best in the business in their respective fields: biomechanics, exercise physiology, sprinting, rehabilitation, strength, conditioning, nutrition and mental prep. Now, I'm 30 years hold and I've been a coach for 10. I have helped youth athletes deadlift 400 lbs and 75 year old arthritic clients be able to pick up a water bottle. My coaching spans many alleys and I've learned a lot over the years, but my passion has always lied with teaching young athletes how to navigate not only the world of general preparation / fitness, but sports performance, mental resiliency and regulation. I've worked with baseball athletes, lacrosse athletes, and professional mma / bjj athletes. My expertise lies in dynamic sports like these where size and muscle aren't what's going to get you to win - what is, is a complete approach only known to those who have coached, been coached, and exhaustingly left behind what wasn't useful and perfected what is. My coaching is holistic: we approach every session with intent. We perform things such as breath work / down regulation, at times meditation. We run, sprint, twist, throw, and lift heavy things. We do this in an environment that doesn't accept half-commitments, but is always willing to adjust on a day as needed and listen to you when you tell us something. Let me know and let's get going building the best person you can be.

Get to know Coach Joshua

About Me:

High school baseball - until I dropped out

Boxing - amateur for 4 years

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - amateur for 1 year

How I can help you improve your game:

- GPP - general physical preparedness. I don't think you'll find programming that is as adaptable and precise as we have. 10 years of experimentation and collaboration, countless hours of study and work. We know how to get you to move well, feel good, feel better, stronger, faster and bigger.

- mental performance - we use various breath work techniques as well as meditation in order to enhance the physical training that we do. Physical is not separate from mental prep.

- listening - we are coaches. We listen for a living. Our goal is to be in constant communication with you. If something in the programming needs to change, we do it. If your recovery is lacking, we give you resources. If you need to adjust a workout for the day, we do that for you. Collaboration is our biggest asset.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

Whiteboard - our session will be written on the whiteboard, we will discuss the details and nuance of the session. Any questions, comments or changes can be made right here.

Warm-up - we have cardio equipment, everyone's warm-up is different. Sometimes it's joint specific training, sometimes it's low level plyo's, sometimes it's sprint warm-ups. All depends on the athlete's needs

The work - the work is performed with a coach watching over. Adjustments are made, percentages / weights are tracked for progress, details about the lifts or the exercises are demoed and discussed.

The finish - we finish with a conversation about the session, what worked and what didn't work. After brutal sessions, we will have a cool down or breath work / meditation, but it all depends on the day. Any accessory / auxillary work is done before this.

Career summary and accomplishments:

- 10 years of experience - worked with everyone from 12 year old youth athletes to 75 year old elderly clients - studied various aspects of health / human performance from experts in their respective fields - worked with baseball, basketball, lacrosse, professional mma fighters / bjj athletes and dancers - owner and founder of Affekt Training - a multi-disciplinary private training space dedicated to real-life human performance training (since 2021)

Best coach I ever had:

Probably my father. At times, we butted heads, of course. What he taught me more than anything was to bend but not break. I learned from an early age that I needed to outwit, outwork and outmaneuver. I needed to listen better. This led me on the path that I am on today, regarding holistic sports performance: everything from breath work, meditation, to health / longevity related research as well as how to get big, strong and athletic.

It all started with the simple question: how can I be better. I ask that of myself everyday to this day.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

My coaching is multi-disciplinary, and precise. A lot of sports performance coaches rely on old data, never having experimented and perfected a system as opposed to copying it. What we do is what matters because my goal is to get you to be the best person you can be, not just the best athlete you can be.

The environment we harbor is one of hard work, dedication and more than anything: adaptability. We are coaches. We listen and adjust on a day as needed, we see movements / discrepancies and we aim to fix them. We see an athlete who needs to lift heavy, we lift heavy. We see an athlete who needs to move better, we get them to move better.

Our goal is to make our system the most cohesive, adaptable and precise that it can be. Our goal is to make our coaching the best resource possible for you to be a better person.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
