Get to know Coach Theresa

About Me:

Born and raised in East Germany, I grew up with a deep passion for swimming, guided by dedicated coaches who consistently pushed me to excel. My journey as an athlete included training alongside world-class swimmers such as Paul Biedermann and Britta Steffen, and later, I moved to the United States to swim with Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel.

As a 2012 Olympian, I placed 12th in the 200 IM at the London Games, driven by a relentless desire to improve in the water, become more athletic, and broaden my horizons by mastering the English language and becoming as versatile as possible.

Today, I serve as a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard while continuing to share my passion for swimming. My experiences as both an athlete and leader fuel my dedication to inspiring others to achieve their best in and out of the pool.

How I can help you improve your game:

By spending enough time with the athlete, I can identify their specific needs and challenges. Often, mental blocks can be more significant than physical limitations, and addressing those is key to unlocking their full potential. Sometimes improvement comes from a simple adjustment to technique, whether it's refining a stroke or focusing on efficiency. In other cases, progress might just require an extra practice session each week to build strength, confidence, or endurance.

Ultimately, my approach is tailored to each athlete’s unique situation, with the goal of helping them overcome obstacles and reach their full potential in the sport.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

A typical training session begins with an evaluation to better understand the athlete—this includes their goals, background, and any specific areas they want to work on. From there, I assess what’s necessary to make meaningful improvements. Every athlete is unique, so each session is tailored to meet their individual needs.

We may focus on refining technique, increasing efficiency in the water, or addressing mental blocks. The session will vary depending on the athlete’s current stage, but it will always be designed to push them toward their full potential while maintaining a supportive and constructive environment.

Career summary and accomplishments:

I have a diverse coaching background, starting as a personal trainer at the Maya Mare Fitness Center in Germany, where I honed my skills in athletic training. Additionally, I served as an assistant coach at the University of West Florida, working alongside the head coach to support the development of swimmers. Through these experiences, I have gained a deep understanding of the importance of correcting technique and improving efficiency in the water. My focus is always on helping athletes refine their movements, enhancing their performance, and fostering long-term growth in the sport.

Best coach I ever had:

The best coach I’ve ever had was Australian coach Andrew Hancock. He gave me the freedom I needed as an experienced athlete to tap into my intrinsic motivation and take ownership of my journey. Andrew profoundly transformed my mindset, teaching me to swim for myself and to strive to impress myself rather than others.

He struck a perfect balance between empathy and toughness, creating an environment that encouraged growth while demanding excellence. His ability to connect with his athletes on a personal level while pushing us to achieve our best results is what set him apart as an exceptional coach.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

I am a patient and dedicated coach who takes the time to truly understand the goals of both the athlete and their parents. My approach focuses on identifying and addressing mental blocks and physical barriers to help unlock potential and build confidence.

Beyond swimming, I also bring experience in athletic training outside the water and am happy to provide guidance if requested. I am passionate about helping athletes grow and would be honored to be the person who supports your athlete on their journey to achieving their best.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.
