Get to know Coach Joel

About Me:

I’ve played soccer at the high school, community college, and UPSL semi-professional levels, giving me firsthand experience in competitive environments. I studied at Bakersfield College and Cal State Bakersfield, and my passion for the game led me to coaching.

I started coaching at my local middle school, helping young players develop, and now I coach at LA Surf, working with talented athletes at a high level. I also offer personal training sessions, focusing on skill development, game IQ, and confidence-building.

With my experience as both a player and coach, I understand what it takes to improve and grow at different stages of the game. My goal is to help athletes sharpen their skills, build their confidence, and take their game to the next level.

How I can help you improve your game:

I help players improve by focusing on technical skills, tactical understanding, physical conditioning, and mental toughness. Through personalized training, I build their confidence and game IQ, teaching them how to perform under pressure, make smart decisions, and stay physically fit. Whether it's mastering ball control, improving positioning, or developing resilience, I guide players to reach their full potential and excel on the field.

What a typical training session looks like with me:

A typical training session starts with a dynamic warmup to get the body ready and prevent injury. Before the session, we always talk with athletes and parents to agree on the specific areas we want to focus on, whether it's technical skills, tactical understanding, or physical conditioning. After that, we dive into technical drills focusing on key skills like dribbling, passing, or shooting. We then move into tactical exercises, where I set up game-like situations to improve decision-making and positioning. The session also includes physical conditioning through agility or endurance drills, and finishes with mental coaching to boost focus and confidence. We wrap up with a cool down and time for feedback to track progress and set new goals.

Career summary and accomplishments:

I began my coaching career at Thomas Jefferson Middle School from 2017 to 2020, where I helped young players develop their skills and passion for soccer. Since 2023, I’ve been coaching at LA Surf, working with competitive youth players to improve their technical abilities, game IQ, and overall performance. In addition to team coaching, I also offer personal training sessions, focusing on individualized development to help players reach their full potential. Whether training for skill development, game strategy, or confidence-building, I’m committed to guiding athletes to succeed at any level.

Best coach I ever had:

The best coach I’ve ever had is my dad. He didn’t just coach, he built something from nothing. In a town where competitive soccer didn’t exist beyond AYSO, he created opportunities for kids who wouldn’t have had them otherwise. He coached me from ages 9 to 16, often without pay, sometimes even paying out of pocket to help our team compete.

What made him different was his commitment to the players and the community. He took teams to games with just 8 players because that’s all we had, never letting circumstances stop us. He didn’t just teach soccer, he gave kids a reason to stay off the streets and keep pushing forward.

For me personally, he was even tougher. He never handed me playing time, I had to earn everything. He pushed me harder than anyone else, making sure I improved, not just as a player but as a person. Looking back, that mindset has shaped the way I train and coach today.

What athletes and parents should know about me:

Athletes and parents should know that I truly care about player development, not just on the field, but as individuals. I’ve played at the high school, college, and UPSL semi-pro levels, and I’ve coached at multiple levels, from middle school to LA Surf. That experience gives me a deep understanding of what it takes to improve and compete at different stages of the game.

I believe in hard work, accountability, and growth. I push my players to be better, but always in a supportive and structured environment. Every session is designed to build confidence, improve skills, and develop game intelligence, so players don’t just train, they learn how to apply it in real games.

For parents, I know firsthand the sacrifices that go into supporting a young athlete. I was raised in a community where resources were limited, so I understand the importance of opportunity. My goal is to provide high quality training and mentorship, helping players reach their potential no matter where they start.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re looking to message a coach for the first time, go to their profile and click “Send a Message”. A type box will show, where you can enter and send your message. To follow up with a coach you've already contacted, log into your account and find the 'Inbox' tab. You'll see your message history and be able to send another note.

Once you find a coach that fits your needs, go to their profile, select the package you'd like to purchase, and click 'Book Lessons'. Here, you can reserve your desired number of lessons along with the number of athletes who will be training. After sessions are booked, coordinate the dates/times for each session on your calendar - using the calendar is important since this is how your coach will get paid.

Paying AU coaches via cash, Venmo, or any 3rd party is strictly prohibited. AU coaches know this, but their partnership with us is to split all bookings 80/20 - so coaches keep 80%. We use our 20% to help them find clients & manage their business. Without the split, we wouldn't be able to help our coaches & community thrive!

We integrate with Stripe - the largest & most secure payment processor in the US - to facilitate bookings. Paying online is required, and it simplifies the process for our coaches since it helps track their schedule & earnings in one place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our support team.

Each coach typically has at least one preferred training location. You can see the location(s) by going to your coach's profile and finding the 'Training Locations' section. If a coach doesn't have locations listed here, you can message the coach to see where they train. Some coaches are willing to travel to clients for lessons, or even meet halfway.

Each coach sets their own schedule for training. You can see a coach's general availability by going to their profile and finding the 'Availability' section - it will list the days and times. If a coach doesn't post their availability, or if your preferred coach doesn't have your desired times available but you want to double check, message them to see if they can work with your schedule.

The AU guarantee (refund policy) has you covered! If you determine the coach isn't a good fit after your first lesson, let us know within 24 hours and you're eligible for a refund. We will also be happy to recommend another coach - be sure to contact our support team.

Our coaches are open to helping athletes of any age and skill level. Please message your desired coach to ensure their skillset fits your needs.

AU was created by former collegiate and professional athletes. We understand the benefits of training with a private coach. It develops discipline, boosts confidence, and provides an undeniable advantage - whether you are just learning the game or looking to earn a college scholarship. All AU coaches are required to pass a thorough onboarding process and we proudly showcase a 10% acceptance rate, so you can trust you're training with the best.

At the end of the day, our mission is to provide athletes with better opportunities to succeed through coaching. You won't find a platform, and group of dedicated specialists, more excited to help you achieve your athletic goals!
