Why We Created Athletes Untapped

Sahuarita Basketball: Mastering Court Vision and Scoring Skills

Basketball in the Sahuarita school system is fast and exciting, requiring players to be in great shape and highly skilled. Our program focuses on the “Big Three” of basketball: shooting, ball handling, and defense. We help players build a reliable jump shot and the footwork needed to score in the paint or from the perimeter. By teaching athletes how to “see the whole floor,” we help them become better playmakers who can lead their team to victory on any court in the valley.

Developing a Repeatable and Accurate Shooting Form

A great shot starts with a solid foundation. We focus on the “feet-to-fingertips” flow, ensuring that the player’s power comes from their legs and finishes with a soft, high-arching release. By practicing the same motion over and over, athletes build the muscle memory needed to hit shots even when they are tired or under pressure from a defender. We emphasize the “follow-through” and a consistent release point, which are the two most important factors in becoming a high-percentage shooter from anywhere on the court.

Ball Handling and Protecting the Rock Under Pressure

To be a playmaker in Sahuarita, you have to be able to handle the ball with both hands without looking down. We drill “eyes-up” dribbling, which allows the player to see open teammates and defensive traps before they happen. Our coaching focuses on “staying low” with the dribble and using the body to shield the ball from defenders. By mastering change-of-direction moves like the crossover and the between-the-legs dribble, players gain the confidence to drive to the basket or escape tight defensive pressure.

Finishing Strong at the Rim with Both Hands

Scoring in a crowded paint requires more than just luck; it requires a variety of finishing moves. We teach players how to use the backboard as a target and how to finish layups with either their left or right hand depending on where the defender is. By practicing “power-layups” and learning how to protect the ball during the jump, athletes become much more effective at scoring through contact. We also work on “post-moves” and “short-jumpers” to give players multiple ways to score when they get close to the basket.

Defensive Positioning and Active Footwork

Defense wins championships, and it all starts with a “defensive-stance.” We teach players how to sit low, keep their hands active, and slide their feet to stay in front of the person they are guarding. By focusing on “lateral-quickness” and learning how to “deny” passing lanes, Sahuarita players become much more difficult to play against. We also teach the basics of “help-defense,” showing athletes how to support their teammates and rotate to prevent easy scores by the opposing team.
