Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
My father was my first coach. He coached and supported me in soccer, and spent countless hours coaching my siblings and I. He always pushed us to try our best, be good teammates, and listen to our coaches.
In High School, my cross country and track coaches, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Cripps, started me on my athletic journey. I ran the mile, and Mr. Kelly was always supportive in both wins and losses. Mr. Cripps was tough, and pushed me hard in practice which helped me become more resilient and build confidence.
My novice rowing Coach, Coach Woll, taught me to never quit, and taught me how to really compete.
Coach Stokes showed me how to row technically well, and that I could succeed as a rower.
Post college, Coach Dietz, taught me how to scull and gave me a job so I could continue training after college. He is a legendary coach in the sport of rowing, and is STILL racing today.
Coach Bohrer was the person who taught me how to TRAIN in the single scull. I appreciated him for being patient with a tough, over-confident, athlete.
Coach Medcalf was my Olympic Trials Coach. His knowledge of physiology helped me to my best performances, and inspired to become a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach after my competitive rowing career.
All of these coaches shaped me as an athlete, and as a coach. I am grateful for all the time they spent with me.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
My role in helping athletes is to fill in the "gaps" in their athletic and mindset training.
Most athletes are doing the right things when it comes to physically training and competing. However, it can be difficult for a coach to work with all their athletes individually.
My job is to help each individual athlete work with their parents and coaches to create a supportive environment. Everyone learns what the individual athlete's strengths and motivations are. They learn what behaviors actually contribute to their success and lead to great performances.
My greatest strength is putting myself in the athlete's "shoes."

How can you help someone improve their game?
With the DISC Behavioral Profile, I will help athletes identify their strengths within their sport, and help them understand what type of athlete they are. The profile serves as a resource throughout an athlete's career, and can be used as a tool to help the athlete be recruited in the sport they want to compete at in college.
DISC also helps athletes become more vocal with their parents and coaches in what they need to be successful. It teaches them to be better teammates and appreciate the team culture that their coaches are trying to create.
As a Strength and Conditioning coach, I can also guide athletes on what they may need on the physical side to improve. I use the Functional Movement Screen with all my athletes to help them identify muscle imbalances and improve deficient movement patterns.
What does a typical training session look like?
Your FIRST single session covers your DISC Profile (which you keep), and TWO 60 minute sessions:
1. DISC Behavior Profile - Delivered Electronically
The DISC questionnaire is emailed to both the parents and athlete directly. The DISC questionnaire typically takes about 10-20 minutes to complete. The profile will be available to the athletes and parents after 24 hours.
2. Introductory DISC Session - 60 minutes Zoom Session or Phone Call (Parents Welcome)
In this first session, we will review your DISC profile, and provide the athlete "homework" to start implementing right away. Parents are welcome at this first session to learn about their athlete, and help facilitate the conversation.
3. Follow Up DISC Session - 60 minute Zoom Session or Phone Call (Parents Welcome)
During your second Follow Up DISC Session we will review your "homework." We will discuss behaviors you have changed since your first session and review the outcomes. You will receive additional "homework" and guidance to use. At this point, we will discuss follow up support with the following packages:
Packages:
Following your first TWO DISC sessions, athletes can sign up for follow up DISC Sessions. Athletes will use their DISC profile on an ongoing basis. We will discuss owning your strengths, creating good habits, communication with teammates and coaches, and preparation for practice and competitions. Athletes can commit to a 3 session, 10 session, or weekly option. This can be very helpful if they are preparing for a tryout or major competition. Homework is assigned throughout, and athletes and parents have unlimited email communication. Email correspondence allows athletes to share practice and competition results, and problem solve challenges they may have. (all athlete emails must have parents copied!).
Coaches may inquire about Team Packages and Team Seminars! Understanding the athlete make up of your team will allow you to build a solid team culture with maximum athlete and parent buy in!
