Who is the best coach you ever had and why?
The best coach I ever had was a woman named Kari. She was the “gung-ho” type of coach who was formerly in the military, and when I tell you she was the harshest coach I’ve ever had, I mean it. Through her coaching style, I quickly learned as a 14 year old that just because someone is hard on you doesn’t mean that it’s because they’re diminishing you/your capabilities, it means they see something in you. She saw something in me at this age so much so that she would make time to be with me and train outside of practice. I went from being an average player who was a “jack of all trades” and “specializes in nothing” to a confident, tenacious 14 year old who knew what it meant to see the fruits of your labor. I have Coach Kari to thank for that. She’s inspired me over the years to always try to see something in people and build off of that as well as how to be a tough yet loving coach.
What should athletes and parents know about you?
What should you know about me? Well, I work hard, and I expect nothing less from you. Every milestone will be celebrated because life isn’t just about the big wins- it’s the little ones that lead to the big ones. Every session, I think you’ll find yourself more and more fond of my style. Will I be hard on you? YES. Will I challenge you? ALSO YES. But will training with me be something you regret? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I have confidence in that. My extensive experience has equipped me with the knowledge to teach both fundamental and advanced techniques effectively. As a coach, I have had the privilege of working with athletes of different ages and skill levels, helping them to not only improve their performance but also to develop/maintain a love for the sport. Let’s see what we can do together.
Coaching Background
Summary of Coaching Background
My volleyball career began in the state of Georgia with over a decade of playing experience at the national elite level, seven years of coaching across various levels, and formerly serving as the director of operations for a club local to the metro ATL area. I can confidently say that my experience would contribute positively to your level of play. Throughout my playing career, I developed a deep understanding of the game, honing my skills and volleyball IQ. This extensive experience has equipped me with the knowledge to teach both fundamental and advanced techniques effectively. As a coach, I have had the privilege of working with athletes of different ages and skill levels, helping them to not only improve their performance but also to develop/maintain a love for the sport. All the while, I have also consistently built and maintained strong relationships, which fostered a sense of community and ensured optimal engagement through effective communication and collaboration.
How can you help someone improve their game?
My coaching philosophy is centered around the belief that my players are humans first, students second, and athletes third. However, when the shoes are laced and feet are on the court, I expect that being an athlete is put at the top of the list. In other words: let your head and your heart be where your feet are. Emphasizing the importance of hard work and trusting the process, I assure that those who commit will see results and behind the toughness in my coaching lies a deep love and care greater than they may have experienced with former coaches. As a result, players trust that I understand their individual needs, can/will tailor my coaching strategies to help them reach their full potential, and give them my 110% day in and day out. Because of my commitment to continuous learning and improvement, I have managed to stay updated with the latest coaching methodologies and techniques.
What does a typical training session look like?
I typically work in 1 hour sessions, most days having training outdoors. Warming up is where it begins, leading to the particular skill set we work on, and followed by a brief cool down. The first 1-2 sessions may be a lot of “talking” more than “touching” - reason being that I need to evaluate and understand why or why not a player is doing something and walk them through the process of how I do and coach techniques. Afterward, each session will have ample touches with opportunities to understand the WHY behind the WHAT. If we don’t understand WHY we’re doing something, it becomes that much harder to use the skill as a weapon in our arsenal.
