Basketball workouts begin before football season has finished. A club coach suggests that missing the offseason program could put an athlete behind. Suddenly, what used to be a pretty simple decision about which sport a child wants to play becomes a bigger question: Is it time to choose one?

For some older athletes, eventually focusing on a primary sport makes sense. But for younger athletes, there usually isn’t a need to rush that decision.

The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend that young athletes have opportunities to participate in multiple sports, particularly before puberty, rather than specializing intensively in one sport at an early age. Research on early specialization has raised concerns about overuse injuries, burnout and whether specializing younger actually provides the competitive advantage families sometimes expect.

Playing multiple sports doesn’t guarantee that a child will become a better athlete, but it does offer variety, both physically and mentally, during years when kids are still developing.

Different Sports Ask Kids to Move in Different Ways

Think about the difference between a basketball game and a swim meet.

A basketball player accelerates, stops, jumps, lands, moves laterally and reacts constantly to other players. A swimmer repeats very different movement patterns while learning body control, rhythm and efficiency in the water. Baseball adds throwing, striking and tracking a moving ball. Soccer brings another set of demands around footwork, endurance and decision-making.

A child who moves between sports gets exposed to more kinds of movement and more ways of solving physical problems, and developing a broad base of movement skills is valuable in its own right. Research has found positive associations between motor competence in young people and other measures such as physical activity and physical fitness. A large 2023 study involving more than 22,000 adolescents found that greater motor competence was associated with higher levels of physical activity and several measures of fitness.

For younger athletes, there is something to be said for accumulating a lot of different movement experiences before training becomes increasingly sport-specific.

Variety Can Also Change the Stress on a Growing Body

One of the strongest arguments against early year-round specialization has less to do with developing new skills and more to do with repeatedly placing the same stress on the body.

Youth athletes are still growing. When a child performs the same movements at high volume throughout the year without enough recovery, certain parts of the body can be exposed to repetitive stress over and over again.

A baseball pitcher is an obvious example because throwing volume can place repeated stress on the shoulder and elbow. But repetitive loading can happen in many sports, whether it’s running, jumping, serving a volleyball or swinging a racket.

The AAP’s 2024 clinical report on overuse injuries and burnout notes that overuse injuries occur when repeated physical stress happens without enough recovery. The report also specifically discusses year-round sports participation and recommends that young athletes have time away from each individual sport during the year.

Playing another sport can naturally provide a break from some of those repetitive movements. A baseball player who switches to basketball for a season isn’t throwing competitively every week. A runner who spends part of the year swimming is training differently.

That said, simply playing multiple sports doesn’t automatically solve the workload problem.

A child going directly from soccer practice to basketball practice and then playing in a lacrosse tournament all weekend may be a multi-sport athlete, but they still aren’t getting much recovery.

The AAP recommends at least one day away from organized sports each week, avoiding more than one organized sport in the same day, and taking roughly two to three months away from each specific sport over the course of a year.

So the goal shouldn’t be to replace year-round specialization with year-round overscheduling.

Kids Get to Experience Different Ways of Competing

Different sports put athletes in different roles.

A child may be the best player on one team and a beginner in another sport. They might be a goalkeeper in soccer, an individual competitor in swimming and one player among five on a basketball court. Each experience asks something different of them.

They meet different teammates and coaches, learn new terminology and rules, and they have to become comfortable being inexperienced again. That can be healthy!

Sports participation more broadly has been associated with positive psychological and social outcomes for children and adolescents. A 2026 review found that youth sports participation was consistently associated with outcomes including greater self-esteem, belonging and interpersonal skills, with especially consistent social benefits seen in team sports.

We can’t say that playing three sports automatically triples those benefits. But changing teams and environments can give children more opportunities to navigate different social groups, coaching styles and competitive situations.

It can also keep one sport from becoming a child’s entire athletic identity at a very young age.

Playing More Than One Sport May Help Keep Sports Fun

This part can get lost when families start thinking years ahead about varsity teams, recruiting and scholarships: kids should actually like playing sports.

The AAP identifies loss of enjoyment, excessive training demands and pressure surrounding youth sports as factors that can contribute to burnout and eventually cause children to leave sports altogether.

Specializing too early can prevent kids from experiencing a sport they might ultimately enjoy more or want to continue later in life.

Not every child wants variety, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. The important distinction is whether the child is choosing that path because they love it or whether the adults around them have convinced them that they can’t afford to do anything else.

Do Multi-Sport Athletes Have a Better Chance of Becoming Elite?

You’ll often hear stories about professional athletes who played football, basketball and baseball growing up. Those examples are interesting, but they don’t prove that playing multiple sports is what made those athletes successful.

What research does suggest is that early specialization is generally not necessary to reach a high level in most sports.

A study found that elite athletes often specialized around ages 14 to 15, while athletes at lower competitive levels in the included research tended to specialize earlier. The researchers concluded that early specialization did not appear to be required for elite athletic success.

Another study examining professional, Olympic and other elite athletes reached a similar conclusion. The available research did not show that specializing at a young age was necessary to reach the elite level, although the patterns vary by sport.

There are exceptions. Sports such as gymnastics, figure skating and diving have historically had earlier peak-performance windows, and training pathways may look different as a result.

For most young athletes, though, there’s little reason to treat specialization at age 9 or 10 as a prerequisite for future success.

Multi-Sport Doesn’t Have to Mean Three Travel Teams

Parents sometimes hear “play multiple sports” and picture adding even more organized activities to an already busy calendar, but it doesn’t have to look like that.

One sport might be highly competitive while another is recreational. A serious baseball player might play basketball for their school during the winter without joining a travel program. A soccer player might swim during part of the offseason. Kids can also bike, ski, play pickup games, climb, dance or participate in other activities without everything becoming another competitive commitment.

Researchers studying multi-sport development have pointed out that there isn’t one single “multi-sport pathway.” Kids can experience variety in many different ways, and the right combination depends on the athlete, family, available opportunities and goals.

You don’t need to engineer the perfect collection of complementary sports. Give kids opportunities to move, compete, learn new skills and figure out what they enjoy.

Eventually Choosing One Sport Is Different From Specializing Too Early

There may come a time when an athlete wants to narrow their focus. That’s a different decision from telling an elementary-school athlete that they need to abandon every other sport to stay competitive.

As athletes get older, they can become more involved in those choices themselves. They have a better sense of what they enjoy, what goals they want to pursue, and what they’re willing to commit to reaching them.

Until then, variety can be a very good thing, and sometimes becoming a better athlete starts with simply letting a kid play.

Explore Different Sports With Athletes Untapped

Trying a new sport doesn’t always require immediately committing to a full season or travel team.

Individual training can give a young athlete a chance to learn the basics, build confidence and see whether they enjoy a sport before making a bigger commitment.

Athletes Untapped connects families with private coaches across a wide variety of sports, making it easier for athletes to explore something new or continue developing in the sports they already love.

Browse private coaches on Athletes Untapped.

Specializing in one sport at a young age might seem advantageous, but it can harm physical and psychological development.
