In fact, some of the best defensive plays happen before a tackle is ever attempted.

A defender closes down an attacker without diving in, forces them toward the sideline, blocks the dangerous passing lane and gives teammates time to recover. The attacker may still have possession, but suddenly they don’t have anywhere useful to go.

That’s defending.

The International Hockey Federation’s current coaching education emphasizes defensive principles such as positioning, channeling, compactness, communication, cover and knowing when to apply pressure. The technical skills matter, but they work best when players understand the problem they’re trying to solve. Explore FIH’s current coach education.

For developing players, that means learning more than how to put a stick on the ball, you have to learn how to control what the attacker can do next.

Defense Starts With Your Approach

One of the easiest mistakes for a young defender to make is running straight at the player with the ball.

It feels aggressive, and it also makes you easy to beat.

If you approach too quickly and arrive out of control, the attacker may only need one touch to move around you. Now you’re behind the play and the next defender has to solve the problem.

A better approach usually means closing space quickly at first and then slowing down as you enter tackling distance.

Get lower.

Stay balanced.

Keep your feet active.

Watch the ball without losing awareness of where the attacker is trying to go.

The objective isn’t always to win the ball immediately, sometimes it’s simply to keep the attacker in front of you.

Learn to Channel Before You Tackle

A good defender doesn’t give the attacker every direction, they try to take something away.

Maybe you want to prevent the attacker from cutting toward the middle of the field, or maybe you’re defending near the circle and want to force them toward the sideline or baseline.

Your body position can help make that happen.

Rather than standing perfectly square, position yourself so the attacker sees one route as easier than another. Then be prepared to defend the space you’re deliberately giving them.

This is often called channeling.

You’re influencing where the attacker goes instead of simply reacting afterward.

For young defenders, a simple cue is:

Protect the dangerous space first.

If you’re defending in the middle of the field, that may mean keeping the attacker outside. If you’re near your circle, don’t make it easy for them to drive straight toward goal.

You don’t have to steal the ball on the first touch to win the defensive situation.

The Tackle Should Come When the Ball Is Available

Once you’re in a good position, now you can think about tackling, but timing matters.

A common mistake is reaching constantly at the ball while the attacker has it protected. Every unsuccessful reach can pull the defender out of balance and give the attacker a chance to accelerate away.

Instead, wait for an opportunity.

Maybe the attacker takes a touch too far from the stick.

Maybe they change direction.

Maybe their head comes down and the ball becomes exposed.

That is when the defender can step in.

The current FIH Rules of Hockey are very clear that a player must not tackle unless they are in a position to play the ball without body contact. Reckless challenges, including dangerous sliding tackles, can be penalized. See the current FIH Rules of Hockey.

For young players, that’s an important distinction: aggressive defending doesn’t mean throwing your body into every challenge, it means putting yourself in a position where you can legally win the ball.

Use the Jab Tackle to Create a Mistake

Not every tackle has to cleanly take possession, sometimes you just want to disrupt the attacker.

A jab tackle is useful because the defender can quickly extend the stick toward the ball without committing the entire body forward. If you knock the ball loose, great.

But even if you don’t, the attacker may have to change direction, pull the ball back or look down.

That hesitation can be enough for another defender to recover.

Practice the jab against a moving attacker rather than only against a stationary ball.

Have the defender approach under control and look for moments when the ball moves away from the attacker’s stick.

The goal isn’t to jab constantly, it’s to recognize when the ball is vulnerable.

A Block Tackle Requires Balance

When the defender is close enough and the ball is available, a block tackle can be an effective way to stop the attacker and potentially win possession.

The important word is balanced.

The defender should be in a strong position with the stick down and enough control to play the ball legally.

If the player lunges from too far away, the tackle becomes much easier to avoid and much harder to recover from.

This is why the approach, body position and tackle aren’t really separate skills.

Good positioning creates the tackle opportunity.

Poor positioning forces desperate tackles.

That is also why I wouldn’t spend an entire defensive practice simply having players tackle a stationary ball; teach the movement that happens before the tackle too.

Interceptions Are Often Better Than Tackles

The easiest tackle is the one you don’t have to make.

A player who reads the next pass and intercepts it can win possession without getting into a one-on-one battle at all.

That requires awareness.

Where is the ball carrier looking?

Which teammate are they trying to find?

Is there a passing lane you can step into without abandoning a more dangerous space behind you?

Interceptions become much easier when defenders scan the field instead of staring exclusively at their own opponent.

This is especially important for midfielders and defenders away from the ball. They should constantly be adjusting their position based on where the ball moves.

You’re not just guarding a person, you’re protecting useful space.

Marking Doesn’t Always Mean Standing Next to Someone

Young defenders are often told to “mark your player,” and they interpret that as standing as close as possible to them, but that’s not always the best position.

Your location should depend on the ball, the attacker and the space you’re protecting.

If the ball is far away, you may be able to leave more distance while staying in a position where you can see both your opponent and the play. As the ball gets closer, the marking may need to become tighter.

Near the circle, losing track of an attacker becomes much more dangerous because a single pass or deflection can become a scoring chance.

FIH’s advanced defensive teaching identifies marking, cover, compactness and balance as connected team-defense principles.

That means a defender should be thinking about two things at once:

Where is my player?

and

Where is the danger?

Sometimes those point you toward the same place, and sometimes they don’t.

Help Defense Matters When Someone Gets Beaten

Eventually, an attacker will beat a defender, and that’s not automatically a defensive failure.

The bigger problem is when nobody behind that defender is ready to help.

A good defensive structure gives the player pressuring the ball some protection.

If the first defender gets beaten, another player can step toward the ball while teammates adjust behind them.

This idea of cover is fundamental.

The first defender can be more confident applying pressure when they know the entire defense isn’t dependent on them winning a perfect one-on-one tackle.

But cover only works when players communicate.

“Left.”

“Inside.”

“I’ve got ball.”

“Drop.”

The exact terminology doesn’t matter as much as everyone understanding it. Defenders who communicate early are much easier to play beside.

Circle Defense Requires More Discipline

The closer the ball gets to goal, the less room defenders have for mistakes.

Inside and around the circle, players need to know where both the ball and dangerous attackers are.

Blindly chasing the ball can create easy passing or deflection opportunities behind you.

This is where marking, communication and body positioning become especially important.

A defender may need to deny the direct path to goal rather than immediately attack the ball.

Another defender may need to protect the back post.

Someone has to deal with an attacker arriving late into the circle.

The individual tackle still matters, but so does the structure around it.

FIH’s defensive education specifically calls out marking in the circle as an important individual behavior within the larger defensive system.

For developing players, teach the simplest version first:

Protect goal-side space.

See the ball.

Know where your attacker is.

Communicate.

Then add more detailed responsibilities as players get older.

Winning the Ball Is Only Half the Play

Young defenders often celebrate a tackle and immediately give the ball straight back.

A successful defensive action should ideally become the start of possession.

Once you win the ball, lift your head.

Is there a simple pass available?

Can you move the ball away from pressure?

Can your team counterattack?

Or does the situation call for a safer option so everyone can reorganize?

This is where the term clearance can sometimes be misleading.

There are moments when getting the ball out of danger is absolutely the right choice, but blindly hitting the ball as far away as possible every time you regain possession isn’t great defending. It often gives the opponent another attack.

If you have time and a teammate available, keep the ball.

Good defenders don’t only stop attacks, they help start the next one.

Defensive Transition Starts Immediately After Losing Possession

Defense isn’t something that begins once everyone runs back into their normal position.

The first few seconds after losing the ball are often critical.

Can the nearest player slow the opponent down?

Can someone block the first forward pass?

Does the team have enough players around the ball to try to win it back, or should everyone recover and become compact?

FIH currently treats transition as one of the central phases coaches should teach alongside attack and defense. That makes sense because the best time to attack a defense is often before it has reorganized.

Your team’s job after a turnover is to take that advantage away as quickly as possible.

For youth players, a useful habit is:

When we lose it, react immediately.

Don’t spend two seconds looking disappointed about the turnover. Find the ball, find your defensive responsibility and get involved.

Practice Defense Against Players Who Are Trying to Beat You

Defensive technique needs isolated repetitions, especially when a player is first learning the tackle, but eventually, the attacker needs choices.

Set up a channel and play 1-on-1.

The defender scores by winning the ball or forcing the attacker out of the area.

The attacker scores by dribbling across an end line.

Now the defender has to decide:

How quickly should I close?

Which direction should I show?

When should I tackle?

Can I delay instead?

That’s much closer to actual defending than performing 20 block tackles against a stationary ball.

Then progress to 2-on-2.

Now the first defender has pressure and the second provides cover.

Then 3-on-3, where marking and communication become more important.

Good Defenders Don’t Have to Win Every Duel

This may be the most important thing young defenders can learn: sometimes your job isn’t to steal the ball.

If you slow the attacker down long enough for your midfield to recover, you’ve helped.

If you force them toward the sideline instead of allowing them into the circle, you’ve helped.

If you make them pass backward, you’ve helped.

If your pressure forces a rushed pass that a teammate intercepts, you’ve helped.

Defense is a team problem.

The best defender isn’t always the player making the most spectacular tackles, often it’s the player who keeps attackers from getting into dangerous situations in the first place.

Individual Coaching Can Help With Defensive Details

Defensive technique can be difficult to correct during a full team practice because so much depends on small details.

A player may be approaching too square.

They may commit their weight too early.

Their stick may be in the wrong position.

They may understand how to tackle but struggle to recognize when the tackle is actually available.

Athletes Untapped connects players with private field hockey coaches who can work individually on tackling, positioning, footwork, marking and decision-making based on what the athlete needs.

Private training doesn’t replace learning your team’s defensive system, but it can give a player more repetitions and feedback on the individual skills that make that system work.

Because great field hockey defense isn’t just about getting the ball off an attacker.

It’s about making the attack go where you want it to go…and knowing exactly when to step in and win it.

Good field hockey defense isn’t just about winning tackles.
